▸ Define mathematical investigation (MI).
▸ State the processes of conducting MI
▸ Ensure that the investigation proceeds in
logical manner.
▸ Provide opportunities for everyone to
present their finished math investigations
output.

What is mathematical investigation?
To examine situations
using various techniques
and in the process of their
exploration, develop
skills(new) that can be
applied to other problems.
Why we do a mathematical investigation?
• to sustain exploration of a mathematical
situation in new ways . It distinguishes itself
from problem solving because it is open-
ended.
• Students need to formulate their own
questions from a given situation.
• Generate first hand data from a conjectures
how we do a mathematical investigation?
A question becomes a problem if the procedure
or method of solution is not immediately known,
but requires you to apply creativity and
previous knowledge in new and unfamiliar
methods.
Note: If the procedure or solution is obvious
then it is not a problem but an exercise.
I. TITLE
• Part of a paper that is read the most, and it is
usually read first. It is, therefore, the most
important element that defines the
mathematical investigation.
• Something catchy.

II. RATIONALE
This is written to describe the reasons for any
study. It is a vital portion of any study as it
explains the significance.
III. Situation
This is the initial exploration of the

mathematical situation that follows the
formulation of problems and generating first
hand solutions.
IV. Statement of the Problem
Once the purpose of the investigation is
identified, the student should express this
purpose into specific problems that serve as the
focus of the investigation.
V. Gathering of Data and Models Formulated
To understand the data, students should
organize through visual representations like
graphs, illustration or tables. The data should be
organized to make correct interpretations.
VI. Making Conjectures
We can find the quotient of the following using
dot method.

VII. Proving/Justifying Conjectures
After making conjectures, there is a need to
proving these conjectures. The students must
be able to identify the most appropriate method
of proof.
VIII. Writing Generalization
The time to summarize the results of the
investigation. In stating the result, the variables
used in the statement should be defined
properly.

in the dividend and divisor per column.

applying the law of exponent for the first
term of the quotient then written in
descending the exponent with the
coefficients of the quotient.
IX. Extensions
In here, the conjecture is being tested with
other cases to determine if the observation is
consistent with these cases. The student must
be able to identify the cases which the
conjecture holds true and not true.
X. References
Referencing can be described as giving credit,
with citation, to the source of information used
in one's work.
