Concentration
This is the ability to focus and maintain
attention on a particular task or scene.

An actor must learn to block out

distractions and be fully present in the
moment to effectively convey the emotions
and intentions of their character.
·Example: "An actor must learn to block out
distractions and be fully present in the moment,
just like a method actor who completely
immerses themselves in the character's
emotional state."
Memory of
Emotion
This lesson involves tapping into the actor's own
memories and emotions to connect with their
character's experiences.
By accessing personal emotions and experiences, an
actor can bring depth and authenticity to their
performances.
·Example: "An actor drawing on their own experiences
of loss to play a character who has suffered a
bereavement is a classic example of this technique."
Dramatic Action
1.Boleslavsky believed that every scene in a play or film
should have a clear objective or goal for the character to
achieve.
Actors must learn to identify these objectives and play
them truthfully, creating tension and conflict within the
scene.

·Example: "A character seeking to reconcile with a loved

one after a heated argument, working towards the goal of
forgiveness and reconciliation is an example of this
technique."
Characterization
In this lesson, actors learn how to create unique and
believable characters.

This involves developing a backstory, physicality, vocal

characteristics, and mannerisms that are consistent
with the character's personality and motivations.

·Example: "An actor creating a distinct personality and

mannerisms to play a fictional character, such as a
quirky scientist or a grizzled detective is an example of
this technique."
Observation
Boleslavsky emphasized the importance of observation in acting.

By closely observing the world around them, actors can develop

a keen eye for detail, nuance, and human behavior, which can be
incorporated into their performances.

·Example: "An actor studying the movements and

mannerisms of real-life people to create a believable
portrayal of a particular profession or social group is an
example of this technique."
Rhythm
This lesson involves understanding the rhythm and
pacing of a scene.

Actors must learn to modulate their speech and

movement to match the rhythm of the dialogue and
action, creating a natural and dynamic performance.

·Example: "An actor adjusting their delivery of lines and

movements to match the pace and tone of the dialogue
and action in a scene is an example of this technique."
By mastering Boleslavsky's First Six Lessons, actors can develop
their craft and deliver performances that are authentic, powerful,
and captivating.

Aspiring actors should study and practice these techniques to

become masters of their craft and deliver performances that leave a
lasting impression on audiences.
