1 GIS Data Import Management

1.1 Overview
Geographical Information System (GIS) Data Import Management (GDIM) transforms and imports engi-
neering data and maps that are created in a GIS environment into the Spectrum Power™ Information Model
Management (IMM). It also manages data activation by supporting coordinated distribution and activation
into the real-time environment through IMM. The GDIM user interface supports the control of the entire GIS
import workflow including visualization of the entire process.
The benefit of GIS data import is that it automatically generates and cyclically updates single-line displays
together with the respective domain data for the control system based on the geographic coordinate data.
Using GDIM, data needs to be entered only once, which reduces the amount of time required to maintain the
data chain and removes the risk of inconsistencies resulting from duplicate data entry.
Data which is not located in the GIS environment can be entered using IMM.

1.2 Highlights
• GIS smart integration enables the GIS to be the distribution network definition source master.

• The scope of GIS-Integration follows the utility process and workflows to manage and operate the distri-
bution grid.

• Intelligent technologies such as change-detection, processing of increments, processing of external

determined increments, and usage in combination with the Auto Display Builder (ADB) helps to reduce
engineering efforts for GIS integration.

• The GIS data import management allows initial bulk import of all data from a GIS or incremental
updates, for example, daily, with reduced data volume.

• The GIS-imported geospatial user displays are fully integrated in the homogenous user environment
allowing fast navigation and simplified workflows.

NOTE

i The geo-coordinates of the equipment must be defined using the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) or
Universal Polar Stereographic (UPS) coordinate systems using a metric-based Cartesian grid.

1.3 Features Summary

1.3 Features Summary

Figure 1-1 GDIM Data Import Process

• GDIM extraction
– Support of different data sources (RDBMS, CSV files).
– Support for DXF file data for static Import.

• Support for delta import. The GIS provides not only bulk, but also incremental data which will be
processed further by GDIM.

• Change management
There are two possibilities:
– Incremental import: The change detection finds the difference between two versions of imported
GIS data and provides the reduced set of delta data for further processing.
– Delta import: GDIM also supports externally determined incremental import. For this method, the
customer must provide a set of changes to GDIM.

• GDIM data validation

– Supports various validation checks of the extracted GIS data.

• GDIM transformation
– Transformation from GIS-specific format to XDF data due to IMM specifications.
– The following two transformation methods are provided:
– Bulk import – Full transformation for initial population. All previous existing data is over-
written.
– Incremental import – Utilized in day-to-day maintenance. Only delta data is processed.

1.4 GDIM Extraction and GDIM Model Transformation

• GDIM user interface and GDIM workflow controller

– Easy handling of the import sequence with the underlying GDIM workflow controller.
– Maintain consistent authorities and access rights across the data engineering system.
– Retain operational changes (Temporary Network Elements) such as jumper, cuts, grounds, mobile
generators, and so on, after a GIS import.

• GDIM – IMM change detection

– The GDIM – IMM change detection checks the consistency between the data bases of IMM (Spec-
trum Power 7 Engíneering System) and GDIM (Domain objects only).

1.4 GDIM Extraction and GDIM Model Transformation

The conversion process of GIS data to the Common Information Model (CIM)-based data model used in IMM
is performed in the following two steps:

• GDIM extraction
– This process uses the data provided by the GIS system as specified by the document GDIM Data
Formats.

• GDIM model transformation

– This process converts the extracted data into the DOM format.
Between the extraction function and the model transformation function, the extracted data is stored in a
persistent database called the extracted dataset. The extracted dataset is suitable for self-contained incre-
mental GIS import, which allows subsequent steps to process only a changed set of data reducing the
processing time and simplifying the import process.

GDIM Extraction
The GDIM extraction retrieves the GIS data and uses this data to create the relevant instances in an extracted
dataset. This modular architecture and generic data repository that is source-system independent, allows
support of different vendors' GIS.
During the extraction, validation rules are executed to check the accuracy of the imported data before
processing them further by the transformation module.

GDIM Change Management

There are two possibilities for GDIM change management.
Incremental Import - GDIM receives a complete set of the GIS dataset. The GDIM change management
performs the detection of changes, which includes connectivity, attribute, and graphic-related modifications,
between two versions of imported sets of GIS Data. The delta data is provided for further processing, which
drastically reduces the processing time of the subsequent transformation and import steps.
Delta Import - GDIM receives GIS data describing increments (delta) and does not do any change detection.

GDIM Data Validation

During the extraction and transformation process, validation rules are executed to check the accuracy of the
imported data before processing them further by the transformation module. In the GDIM User Interface
(UI), the operator can enable or disable the data validation and select which of the validation rules can be
executed:

• Attribute checks:
– Null check
– Range check
– Enumeration check

• Consistency checks
– Check phase and voltage
– Graphic consistency check

NOTE

i The starting point for phase and voltage tracing should be available, for example, the feeder head switch.

The validation results or findings are displayed in the GDIM UI.

GDIM Model Transformation

The GDIM Model Transformation function transforms the data from the extracted dataset model into the CIM
based Domain Object Model (DOM) used by Spectrum Power. Additionally, the GDIM model transformation
performs a pattern-based modification of the dataset if the model provided by the GIS is not usable by the
Spectrum Power System.
This transformation process is based on configurable rules. For example, based on rules, it can add elbow
switches for distribution transformers, as required, if they are not modeled in the GIS.
The GDIM model transformation supports two methods, bulk and incremental. A full transformation is
needed for initial population while the incremental transformation is utilized in day-to-day data mainte-
nance. The base for any GDIM model transformation is the extracted dataset, thus, the incremental changes
are established by comparing two versions of the extracted dataset. Before activation into the runtime
system, the transformed data can be viewed and validated.

GDIM – IMM Change Detection

The GDIM – IMM change detection checks the consistency between the data bases of IMM (Spectrum Power
7 Engineering System) and GDIM. An export from IMM is compared with the last imported GIS dataset. The
result is a list of equipment that is missing at either side. The list is displayed in the GDIM user interface.

NOTE

i The GDIM – IMM change detection checks only the equipment that have a GISTAG (the equipments that
have been imported from GIS to IMM and are not objects that have been added manually in IMM). Only
the mutual existence of the objects in GDIM and IMM is checked, objects attributes or graphics are not
compared.

1.5 GDIM User Interface and Workflow

The GDIM UI represents the visualization of the process status and the control of the import process with the
underlying GDIM workflow controller. The user can select either continuous execution or manual stepwise
execution.
The GDIM workflow retains operational changes like jumpers, cuts, grounds, mobile generators, or other
temporary network elements (manual changes) after a GIS import. Unresolved conflicts, inconsistencies, and
other discrepancies are logged and identified for an operator to correct manually.
