Trick OR Treat

Language Target: If you have 15 minutes
and are looking for a fabulously funny
Halloween lesson for any age, give Trick
OR Treat! a try. In the story, two students
are discussing the approaching Halloween
and they'll create a hilarious conversation
while working with parts of speech,
vocabulary and singular versus plural
nouns.
Setting Up: Prior to handing out the
worksheets, write the following on the
board: “Tell me an animal,” ”Tell me a
sport’s item,” “Tell me an emotion
adjective,” and “Tell me a color.”
Encourage three or four responses for
each request and write them on the board.
Next, ask students for two or three
responses for each of the following. Begin
with: “Tell me. . .”
a fruit (apple, mango, etc.)
a country (Egypt, Peru, Brazil, etc.)
a number (7, 34, 492, 2,877, etc.)

a size (Large, small, enormous, etc.)
a snack food (popcorn, potato chips,
ice cream, etc.)
Getting Started: Pair the students and hand out
the Trick OR Treat Worksheet A to Student A
and Trick OR Treat Worksheet B to the other.
They are not to read the sentences yet!
Students begin by asking their partner
only for the appropriate information to fill in
the blanks. Questions should be phrased: “Tell
me a ….. .”
When all of the missing information has
been filled in, have them read their script by
alternating turns; Student A begins by reading
#1 on his/her worksheet and the Student B
responds by reading #2 on his/her worksheet.
Variation 1: Have pairs of students read and/or
act out their scripts to the rest of the class.
Higher level students could be encouraged to
do this from memory.
Variation 2: Have all Student A students remain
in their seats while Student B students change
to a new partner. This way, new pairs are
formed. Have them read through their
dialogues again.

Variation 3: Once students have finished this
lesson and fully understand how it works,
divide the while class into a Student A group
and a Student B group. In unison, the Student
A group shouts out: “Tell me an adjective.”
The Student B group confers and agrees on
one answer. The whole class continues in this
fashion until all of the blanks have been filled
in.
Then, the Student A group reads line #1
in unison and the Student B group reads line
#2 and so on.
Building Fluency: Use this lesson to begin a
follow-up discussion about the custom of
Halloween.
