Standardized terminology and language in informatics are part of healthcare systems that
improve communication across different fields, including nursing research, interventions, and
management. Standardized terminology and language used for diagnosis during a nursing
intervention can be integrated and documented electronically to facilitate their use by nurses.
Their use greatly improves intra- and interprofessional communication (Hebda et al., 2019).
Meaningful use is one aspect that informatics nurses and healthcare providers must understand to
communicate clearly. It refers to using electronic health technology correctly to facilitate the safe
sharing and exchanging of information to improve patient care. The role of meaningful use in
healthcare is massive in terms of engaging patients and their families, ensuring patient
providers, and reducing health disparities while promoting safe and quality patient care.
Meaningful use relies on Electronic Health Records (EHR), which has potential
significance to my nursing practice. EHR improves all aspects of healthcare, including patient
care, efficiency, safety, quality, and communication (Rathert et al., 2019). Due to its
improvement of care outcomes, Medicare and Medicaid Services has offered financial incentives
to care providers who demonstrate they are indulging in the correct meaningful use of EHR.
Therefore, understanding meaningful use in my practice is crucial in ensuring the hospital fully
implements and uses EHR correctly to improve the quality of care. Most organizations that meet
the meaningful use requirements improve the quality of care services to their patients, thus
reducing mortality to a greater extent when compared to hospitals that have fully adopted EHR
