Homework 5: READ ALL DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY and complete all tasks assigned below.

An option
to provide a response as a file upload will be provided as an assignment to submit on CANVAS.

Using Chart Builder in SPSS (Bar Charts & Error Bars)

Task 3A: Using the Notebook.sav file posted in Module 5 Resources recreate Figure 5.21 Bar chart of the
mean arousal for each of the two films in TWO formats. Pay special attention to all features (e.g., grid lines;
transparent background, error bars: 95% CI). Make sure to add your labels (title, x-axis label, y-axis label
within SPSS). (1) For the first format, change the color of your bars to GREEN for Male and ORANGE for
Female. (2) For the second format, recreate the same bar chart using a patterns (instead of color). Hint:
Refer to SPSS Tip 5.3 Colors or Patterns?
Original Graph from the text

What variable should you assign as your x-axis?

What variable should you assign as you y-axis?
What is your cluster variable?
What do the error bars (95% CI) represent in this graph?

Task 3B: Provide an interpretation of Figure 5.21. What information do we obtain by using a clustered bar
chart? Provide your interpretation in the context of the study (i.e., what should the company director conclude
regarding differences in psychological arousal for men and women? Is there really such a thing as a “chick
flick”?) For full points, provide a comprehensive response.

A clustered bar chart is an effective visualization tool for displaying and comparing data across different groups
and categories. It provides insights into patterns, trends, relative differences, and distribution characteristics,
enabling a better understanding of the data at hand. According to this bar graph we can conclude that males
get more aroused during the film than females. Also the notebook have high chances of arousal than a

documentary about notebooks, hence we can conclude that if the director wants to get more people aroused
he/she should use the notebook itself rather than a documentary about notebooks.

Task 3C: Using the Notebook.sav file posted in Module 5 Resources recreate Figure 5.21 using a Clustered
Boxplot. This should complement the bar chart created in Task 3A. Make sure to add your labels (title, x-axis
label, y-axis label within SPSS).

Task 3D: Compare and contrast the clustered bar chart created in Task 3A with the clustered boxplot in
Task 3C. What additional information is gained from using a boxplot to explain what is happening in the
context of the study? (i.e., Include the description in Task 3B and expand it further with the additional
information observed using a clustered boxplot).

Using a box plot helps us understand the point at which there ia maximum arousal by checking the mean and
the range in which it is highly concentrated. In conclusion a boxplot gives a more detailed information than a
bar graph.
