Short Texts for Sight Translation

Consider the following short text for Sight Translation. There are three steps you are
recommended to follow:
1- Read the text silently until you have reached a speedy enough reading; then, read it
loudly.
2- Chunk the text. Make sure that your chunks or segments are neither too long nor
too short.
3- Sight-translate the text. Make sure you do not exceed one-and-a-half minutes.

A Tight Schedule
Last Friday, Phil had a tight schedule. He had to fly to Washington, D.C., on a business trip. His plane left
La Guardia Airport at 8:30 and he had an appointment at the Pentagon at 10:00. At 12:00 he had a date
for lunch and at 2:30 he planned to take a plane back to New York. He had a meeting with his boss in his
New York office at 4:00, and at 5:45 he had a date with his mother for dinner and the theater. However,
Phil’s day didn’t go according to schedule.

Success Story
Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man. Frank is
now the head of a very large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop. It was his
job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and

in 1938 he bought a small workshop of his own. During the war Frank used to make spare parts for
aeroplanes. At that time he had two helpers. By the end of the war, the small workshop had become a
large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. Frank smiled when he remembered
his hard early years and the long road to success. He was still smiling when the door opened, and his wife
came in. She wanted him to repair their son's bicycle!

Youth
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of red cheeks and supple knees. It is
a temper of the will; a quality of the imagination; vigor of the deep springs of life. Youth means a
predominance of courage and timidity of the appetite for adventure over a life of ease.

Manned Flights to Other Planets

Men have already walked on the moon and sent unmanned “probes” to nearby planets. Some day
astronauts may explore more distant planets and the moons which circle them. If they do, they will
probably take at least two space ships. Then, if one ship has trouble, the other can help. There will be a
scientific laboratory on one of the ships. The recreational facilities will include a library and movies, and
the crew will include a cook and a doctor. The trip may take several years.
