Possessives are forms that we use to talk about possessions and relationships between things and
people. They take different forms depending on how they are used.
Possessive Adjectives
Possessive adjectives are used to show possession or ownership of something. While we use them
when we refer to people, it is more in the sense of relationship than ownership.
I me my
he him his
it it its
we us our
The possessive adjective needs to agree with the possessor and not with the thing that is possessed.

Possessive pronouns
Possessive pronouns are used in English to avoid repeating information that is already clear. In general, it makes the
sentence less confusing because the same information is not being repeated.
I me my mine
it it its -
we us our ours
We can use a possessive pronoun instead of a full noun phrase to avoid repeating words:
Is that John's car? No, it's mine. (NOT No, it's [my car].)
Whose coat is this? Is it yours? (NOT Is it [your coat]?)
Her coat is grey. Mine is brown. (NOT [My coat] is brown.)
