Possessive adjectives:

Possessive adjectives are words that indicate:

1. Ownership of something:
It means that somebody possesses something. That he/she is the owner of an specific object.
Examples:
This is my computer.
Juan uses his new cellphone everyday.
I think this is his cellphone.
This is our new house.

It means that we have an emotional relationship with another person/people.
Example:
My wife is beautiful.

Things to consider when using possessive
adjectives:

1. When we use possessive adjectives, we always have to mention the noun (object) that is owned or that has the
relation with.
2. The possessive adjective always goes before the object (noun) that is owned or has the relationship with.
(possessive adjective + noun).

Examples:
This is my computer.

Michael lives with his mother.


Things to consider when using possessive
adjectives:

3. We don’t have to writes the plural “S” to the possessive adjective when the noun (object) is plural.
Examples:

INCORRECT: Ours cars are expensive.


CORRECT: Our cars are expensive.

4. Do not confuse “its” and “it’s”.


 “Its” is a possessive adjective Its food is very expensive.
 “It’s” is the contraction of “it is.” It’s (it is) the best day of my life.

Possessive Pronouns:

Possessive pronouns are words that we use to avoid repeating unnecessary information. Example:

1. This book is my book. In this sentence the word book is repeated 2 times
unnecessarily.

2. This book is mine. In this sentence the word mine replaces my book.

 Those shoes are your shoes. Those shoes are yours.
 This pencil is his pencil. This pencil is his.

That computer is my computer, not your computer.

That computer is mine, not yours.

No, we are the owners because animals have no concept of ownership.

The only ways of using its as a possessive pronoun is to say that an animal or a things did something by its own (que un
animal o una cosa hizo algo o hicieron algo por si mismo(s) / por su cuenta.)

I was looking for my dog to wash it, but it came by its own.

Buscaba a mi perro para bañarlo, pero el vino por si mismo/ por su cuenta.

I wanted to turn off my computer, but it turned off by its own.

Queria apagar mi computadora, pero se apagó por su cuenta / por si misma.
