1.0 SCOPE
This specification covers the minimum requirements for thermal insulation, materials and
methods of application for piping, vessels and equipment.
Items requiring insulation for the purpose of heat conservation, temperature stabilization or
personnel protection are shown on the mechanical flowsheet.
2.0 GENERAL
2.1 Insulation shall be classified as follows:
Type I - Calcium Silicate
2.2 Equipment and piping shall be insulated for the purpose of conservation of heat,
temperature stabilization, or personnel protection.
2.3 Piping and equipment operating with fluid temperatures in excess of 160 °F shall be
insulated for burn protection of personnel to a height of 7’ above grade and platforms
and 2’ outside of platforms, walkways, etc.
2.4 Heat-transfer equipment in hot services, other than coolers and condensers, shall be
completely insulated except for supporting members and flanges. Shell flanges,
channel flanges and nozzle flanges shall not be insulated. Nozzle necks shall be
insulated up to the nozzle flange.
2.5 All accessories such as level controllers, level gauges, pipe bridles, etc., which are
attached to insulated equipment shall be insulated with equivalent thickness and
materials required for the equipment.
2.6 The following parts need not be insulated, except for burn protection of personnel.
2.7 For personnel protection, uninsulated flanges, valves, pump, etc., shall be insulated as
follows:
2.7.1 Double wrap of insulating blanket with insulating value equivalent to 1/8”
asbestos cloth to flange edges, secured with stainless steel wire.
2.7.2 Recover in fiberglass cloth, external with silicone for weatherproofed, reinforced
with stainless steel mesh. Internal insulation by mineral wool 4.5 lbs/ft3, secured
with stainless steel accessories, pins and hooks. Secured the jacket with
galvanized wire in hooks".
2.7.4 Aluminum secured with stainless steel metal screws along longitudinal joint and
1/2” wide by .020” 18-8 stainless steel bands around circumference at each
end.

3.1.1 Type I insulation is calcium silicate and shall be used for heat conservation
purposes. Thickness of insulation shall be in accordance with Table I herein.
3.1.2 Type II insulation is Foamglass and shall be used for personnel protection
purposes. Thickness shall be in accordance with Table II herein.
3.1.3 Moisture barrier is required for Type II insulation. This moisture barrier shall be
water emulsion polyvinyl acetate type mastic used with reinforcing mesh as
recommended by the mastic manufacturer. Moisture barrier shall cover
insulation completely before weatherproofing is installed.
3.1.4 Insulation weatherproofing for regular surfaces on insulation in all services shall
be aluminum sheet. Use .016” thick sheets with 1-1/4” corrugations on vertical
vessels. On heat transfer equipment and horizontal vessels, use 0.016” thick
sheets which may be smooth, embossed or have 3/16” corrugations or with
0.020” thick smooth sheets. Piping insulation may be covered with 0.016”
sheets with 3/16” corrugations or with 0.020” thick smooth sheets. Weather-
proofing for irregular surfaces shall be polyvinyl acetate mastic used with
reinforcing mesh as recommended by the mastic manufacturer. Moisture
barrier shall be installed between calcium silicate and aluminum. The moisture
barrier may be attached to the jacketing and shall be either polyethylene and
Kraft paper, or Eagle-Picher “Insulseal” or equal.
3.1.5 Tie wire shall be No. 16 gauge stainless steel, 12% or more chrome, annealed.
3.1.6.1 Bands to secure insulation shall be ½” wide by 0.02” thick for vessel 8’
diameter or smaller and ¾” wide 0.02” thick for vessels larger than 8’
diameter. Band material shall be stainless steel, 12% or more chrome.
3.1.8 Sealer for calcium silicate shall be Eagle-Picher “Super 66” or equal. Sealer for
foam glass shall be Pittsburgh Corning’s “Pittseal III” or equal.
4.1.1 The following table specified the minimum insulation thickness of Type I to be
applied to piping and equipment for heat conservation, or condensation
protection.

5.2 Thermal insulation on equipment and piping shall be applied in accordance with the
following procedures:
5.2.1 Clean outside surfaces of the equipment, and apply primer coat in accordance
with manufacturer’s procedure.
5.2.2 Apply calcium silicate block insulation. When applicable double layered
insulation shall be applied using the staggered joint method, with all joints tightly
fitted together to eliminate voids.
5.2.3 Secure the insulation in place with stainless steel; bands on 12 inch centers for
vertical equipment and 9 inch on centers for horizontal equipment. Secure
piping insulation in place with tie wire (4 inch and smaller pipe) or bands on 9
inch centers.
5.2.4 Install moisture barrier between calcium silicate and aluminum. Apply
weatherproofing mastic to all irregular surfaces.
5.2.5 Weatherproof the insulation with aluminum jacketing. In any case, a 3-inch
overlap shall be provided at both vertical and horizontal joints and all joints shall
shed water. “Z” clips shall be placed on 18-inch centers in all horizontal joints on
vertical equipment. All cutouts in aluminum jacketing shall be weatherproofed
by flashing with aluminum sheet and/or caulking with suitable mastic flashing.
5.2.5.1 Secure the aluminum jacketing in place using one of the following
methods:
5.2.5.2 Band the jacketing on-3’-0” centers and fasten all edges of the jacketing
using #8 aluminum sheet metal screws or aluminum pop rivets on 6
inch centers.
5.2.5.3 Band the jacketing on 6’-0” centers and fasten all edges of the jacketing
using #8 aluminum sheet metal screws or aluminum pip rivets on 4 inch
centers.
5.2.7 On vertical vessels with a diameter of 6 feet or larger, the corrugated aluminum
jacketing shall be further supported by attachment to horizontal metal bands
running circumferentially around the outside layer of insulation. One band shall
be used for each horizontal row of aluminum sheets and shall be located
beneath the jacketing halfway between the top and bottom edges of the sheets.
