This specification covers requirements for engineering and installation of thermal insulation
and Acoustic insulation of piping and equipment.

2.0 GENERAL

This specification covers requirements for engineering and installation of thermal insulation of
piping and equipment and must conform to the following:

a) Only proven stress-corrosion safe insulation material shall be applied on stainless steel.
Insulation materials to be used on austenitic stainless steel shall be low Chloride / Low
Sodium as per ASTM C 795 specifications for safe use over stainless steel.

b) Insulation materials shall be asbestos-free

c) Insulation materials shall be chemically inert, rot-proof, vermin-proof and not injurious
to health.

d) Material shall be new and shall be used prior to the expiration date. Sealants, mastics,
and adhesive shall be supplies in factory-sealed containers.

e) Insulation jacketing shall be provided with factory applied moisture barrier.

f) Insulation containing sodium silicate shall not be used over alloys containing
molybdenum, such as 316 stainless steel, Hastelloy-X and Inconel 625, operating at
400 °C or hotter.

g) When the temperature goes above 650°C the normal insulating materials break down.
The solution is a use double layer system. Ceramic fiber insulation shall be used for
the inner layer.

h) Insulation shall be applied to Heat Conservation Insulation in piping systems operating

above 16°C. valves shall be insulated. Whereas some valves, flanges, etc. shall not be
insulated as defined on paragraph 3.4.1.

b. Application of required substrate protective coating systems, including touch-up of

previously applied coatings.

c. Installation and testing of required tracing systems.

d. Cleaning of surfaces that are to receive insulation.

5.1.2 If required, application of insulation may proceed before pressure testing is complete,
provided that all welds and flanged and threaded connections are left exposed until the
pressure testing is complete. Temporary terminations of installed insulation shall be
adequately protected at all times.

5.1.3 Mastics shall not be applied within 24 hours of ambient air temperature falling below 4.4°C.

5.1.4 Surface to be insulated shall be dry, free from frost and condensation and hand-cleaned by
the insulation applicator to the extent of removing loose rust, loose paint film, salt, dirt, grease,
oil, moisture, or other foreign matter prior to application of insulation materials. Stainless steel
items shall be brushed with stainless steel brushes only.

5.1.5 When applying multi-layer insulation, each succeeding layer shall be staggered to the
longitudinal and circumferential joint of the layer beneath. All joints of all layers shall be
staggered.

5.1.6 Each layer of multi-layer insulation shall be held in place separately. See Appendix 4 for
details.

5.1.7 All insulation sections shall be trimmed and tightly butted to eliminate voids, gaps, or open
joints.

5.1.8 The open end of all insulation shall be neatly finished either by beveling the insulation or by
using cement.

To 93 18.2
~ 204 9.1
~ 260 3.6
~ 370 2.7
Above 370 1.8

5.2.2 Insulation expansion joint shall be a minimum of 25 mm wide, packed tightly with mineral fiber

Vertical pipe insulation shall be supported by a pipe insulation support located directly above
all elbows, flanges or flanged valves. Additional supports are required at a maximum of every
6425 mm of uninterrupted length.

5.4 Weatherproofing

5.4.1 On flat, larger curved and irregular insulation surface, when mastic weatherproofing is
specified, the surface shall be covered with a tack coat of mastic sufficient to embed
reinforcing. The reinforcing shall be overlapped a minimum of 50 mm. An application of
insulation finishing cement may be required to obtain adhesion on fibrous materials.

5.4.2 The weatherproofing mastic shall then be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s
printed instructions over the reinforcing, pressing it through the mesh to obtain a good bond.
Care shall be taken to completely fill and seal the mesh openings.

5.4.3 The combined thickness of the weatherproofing mastic and reinforcing shall be in accordance
with the manufacturer’s recommendation.

5.4.4 Mastic weatherproofing shall overlap adjoining metal surfaces to provide a weather-tight joint.

5.5 Finish for Outdoor Exposure

5.5.1 Jacketing for cylindrical surfaces shall be applied with 75mm circumferential and longitudinal
laps.

vertical lines, S, J or Z clips shall be used on every circumferential lap to support the
jacket.

b. On horizontal piping, the longitudinal finish lap shall be positioned to shed rain water and
minimize dust collecting. The preferred location of laps is at 4 and 8 o'clock.

6.0 PROTECTION

6.1 Sharp outside edges of insulation are especially vulnerable to breakage and abuse and shall
be well rounded for maximum protection.

6.2 Insulation systems must be caulked and/or sealed at all possible points of moisture entry.

6.2 The insulation contractor shall apply the finish covering as soon as practical after the
insulation has been secured to assure protection from inclement weather.

6.3 If bare insulation cannot be finished before the end of the working day, the insulation must be
protected against the elements.

6.4 Insulation must be thoroughly dry at the time of weatherproofing.

7.0 ACOUSTIC INSULATION (A) AND HEAT & ACOUSTIC INSULATION (HA)

Acoustical insulation shall be applied to such parts as around reducing valves, blow-off valves
and equipment, where noise originates from. These parts shall be indicated on the Line List,
P&ID and Process Data.

7.1 CONDITIONS FOR ACOUSTIC INSULATION (A) AND HEAT & ACOUSTIC

thickness as the insulation of the adjacent pipe, exception to this are flanges in hydrogen
service. Pipe supports shall be insulated up to the concrete or steel base.

7.1.2 Vibro-acoustic seals shall be used where metal to metal contact would normally occur. It
should have minimum thickness of 3mm and a minimum width of 50mm. Synthetic and natural
rubber materials may be used as in vibro-acoustic seals, but in cases these materials are
incompatible with the operating temperature, such seals shall be made of a compressed layer
of porous material (e.g. mineral fiber). If the seal material is made of porous material, the outer
edge shall be weatherproofed with flexible mastic compound.

7.1.3 Acoustic enclosures for valves, flanges and expansion joints shall be installed, it shall be
easily dismountable to provide access to those items. Joints shall be sealed to prevent noise
leakage with a flexible mastic compound. See Appendix 12 for details.

7.1.4 Pipe line Acoustic insulation before and after the flanges shall terminate considering the bolt
length plus 30mm.

7.1.5 Thickness for Acoustic insulation that serves also as hot insulation (HA) shall be determined
