consisting of multifarious disciplines of Page 5
Engineering Studies. VELS is also known for Faculty Board
many things; one such aspect is its rich cultural Page6
diversity, with students coming from the four Professional Societies
corners of India, the non-resident Indian
community, and foreign students from the Asia Page6
Pacific, Europe, the Americas, and Africa. All Industrial Visit &

this means that in this family of ours, we have
ample opportunities to learn about other Page8
cultures and civilizations as well as project our Top5 Emerging Areas
own diversity, be it our ways of life, language, in Automobile
or food! That is what makes VELS such a fun Engineering
place to be. At the same time, I must also say Page9
that there could be temptations that would have Recent Events
to be resisted. Aside from the fact that VELS
has zero tolerance for any form of ragging, our
campuses are also tobacco, alcohol, and drug-
free, and we go the extra mile in ensuring that
it stays that way.

Congratulations once again for your effort in

releasing this newsletter.

Dr. Ishari K. Ganesh

Chancellor

Vice- Chancellor Cubicle Dear Students and Faculty of Automobile Engineering,

I am monstrously satisfied to realize that the Department of
Automobile Engineering at Vels University is drawing out a
newsletter called 'Auto Express' from their area of expertise. As
you settle down, you will discover the wide scope of scholastic
open doors that VELS offers and the fine opportunity to truly
pursue your fantasies with enthusiasm. Your educators here
have been carefully picked and will make you feel great in a
study hall setting as well as in the past. It is this bond directly
from the primary semester that sets nature for the span of your
Examination. We might be too happy to even consider stepping
in with our commitments, mentally and financially. This
pamphlet will give a stage to our understudies and staff to
grasp their inventive thoughts and new reasoning.
With Best Wishes,
Dr. S. SRIMAN NARAYANAN
Vice-Chancellor

Registrar Cubicle Dear Students and Faculty,

It is my great pleasure to extend heartfelt greetings for
releasing Auto Express, the newsletter of the Department of
Automobile Engineering, School of Engineering, Vels University,
Chennai. I am sure all of you are extremely excited about
studying at this great institution in whatever field you have
chosen. I have been observing VELS for quite some time now,
academically, professionally, and personally, being in touch
with the top management and administrators. There is no
question in my mind that this institution is at the top, and this
did not happen by chance. It is a meticulous and deliberate
strategy that was put in place by the grand visionary Founder
Chancellor, who has built a number of first-rate educational
institutions with the sole objective of imparting quality
education without losing track of what India is all about.
With Best Wishes,
Dr. P. Saravanan

Dean’s Cubicle Dear Faculties and Students,

It is my proud privilege to convey my message from the
Newsletter of the Automobile Engineering Department”. You
will also realize that VELS goes far beyond academics. It is an
institution that places an emphasis on research, a critical
component of our future. Your professors will in still a sense of
interest and curiosity that will want you to get involved in
probing for deeper meanings and conclusions. Every year we
have a Research and Science Day that will encourage students,
at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to present
papers, the best of which eventually find their way to high-
quality journals. Research and innovations are two that VELS
attaches a lot of importance to, aside from personal and
professional satisfaction, it helps this institution to contribute
to industrial & societal needs.
With Best Wishes,

A significant number of you have originated from the four
corners of India or so far as that is concerned even from far
away nations. Give me a chance to reveal to you that VELS has
such a rich assorted variety of individuals that makes it such a
fun spot to be in. Utilize the event to appreciate fresher things
throughout everyday life - companions, dialects, sustenance, for
example! There are additionally various clubs in this grounds
may intrigue you .In the case of nothing else, venture into the
city to encounter the rich recorded and social legacies. Yet, one
thing without a doubt is that you won't be exhausted. Welcome

Top5 Emerging Areas in Automobile Engineering:

Mechanical engineers are critical to technologies that serve people. Emerging

technologies in NEMS, Friction stir welding, Beam powered propulsion,
Biomechanics and CAD will likely come together to transform how engineers
work.

3D Metal Printing:

The powder bed fusion 3D printing family includes the metal

additive manufacturing technologies Selective Laser Melting
(SLM) and Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS). Both processes
employ a laser to scan and selectively fuse (or melt) metal powder
particles, fusing them together and producing a part layer by layer.
This is one of the many similarities between the two methods.
9

Additionally, metals in the form of granules are the materials employed in

both processes.

The foundations of the particle bonding process (as well as patents) are what
differentiate SLM and DMLS: While DMLS employs a powder made of elements
with different melting points that fuse at a specific temperature, SLM uses
metal powders with a single melting temperature and completely melts the
particles.
Bio Diesel:
Biodiesel is a biofuel mostly generated from oily plants and algae, with certain
additional oily sources used in smaller amounts (such as waste cooking fat
from restaurant deep-frying). Biodiesel is used in diesel engines and is often
blended with petroleum diesel fuel in varying amounts. It has found the most
acceptance in Europe. also see alternative energy.

Common plants utilised in the manufacturing of biodiesel include soy and oil
palm. It has been challenging to commercially develop the utilisation of algae
and cyanobacteria as sources for biodiesel, despite their potential. Up to 40%
of the weight of some algae species is made up of lipids, which can be used to
make biodiesel or synthetic petroleum. According to some calculations,
cyanobacteria and algae might produce 10 to 100 times more gasoline per
unit area.
Nano technology:
Nanoscience and nanotechnology are the study and application of extremely
small things and can be used across all the other science fields, such as
10

chemistry, biology, physics, materials science, and engineering. Nanoscience

and nanotechnology involve the ability to see and to control individual atoms
and molecules. Everything on Earth is made up of atoms—the food we eat,
the clothes we wear, the buildings and houses we live in, and our own bodies.
Biodiesel is a biofuel mostly manufactured from oily plants and algae, with
some additional oily sources used in smaller amounts (su Nanoscale
materials have been utilised for centuries, despite the fact that current
nanoscience and nanotechnology are relatively new. The hues in the
mediaeval cathedrals' stained glass windows were produced by different-
sized gold and silver particles hundreds of years ago. Simply put, the artists
of that time were unaware that the techniques they employed to produce
these exquisite works of art actually caused modifications to the chemical
makeup of the materials they were using. In order to benefit from the
improved qualities of materials made at the nanoscale, such as better
strength, lower weight, more control of the light spectrum, and increased
chemical reactivity, scientists and engineers today are developing a wide
range of methods.

Composites:
Composites are a combination of components. In our industry,
composites are materials made by combining two or more natural or
artificial elements (with different physical or chemical properties) that are
stronger as a team than as individual players. The component materials don’t
completely blend or lose their individual identities; they combine and
contribute their most useful traits to improve the outcome or final product.
11

Composites are typically designed with a particular use in mind, such as

added strength, efficiency or durability.
