LITERATURE REVIEW
The literature review section of the project titled "Innovative IT Solutions in Nike's
Supply Chain Management" serves as a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of
existing research, scholarly articles, industry reports, and case studies related to the
integration and impact of IT solutions within supply chain management contexts. This
section aims to provide a thorough understanding of the theoretical frameworks, best
practices, emerging trends, and empirical evidence pertaining to the intersection of IT
and supply chain management, with a specific focus on Nike and its supply chain
operations.

1.Conceptual Framework of IT-Enabled Supply Chain Management:

The conceptual framework of IT-enabled supply chain management forms the
foundational basis for understanding the role and significance of IT solutions in
optimizing supply chain performance and resilience. Drawing upon seminal works by
scholars such as Chopra and Meindl (2004), Christopher (2016), and Simchi-Levi et al.
(2008), the literature review delineates key concepts, principles, and components of
supply chain management, including sourcing, production, distribution, logistics, and
customer relationship management.
Central to the conceptual framework is the notion of supply chain integration, which
emphasizes the seamless coordination and collaboration among supply chain partners
facilitated by IT-enabled communication, information sharing, and decision-making.
The literature review explores various models of supply chain integration, such as the
bullwhip effect, demand-supply matching, and collaborative planning, forecasting, and
replenishment (CPFR), highlighting their implications for supply chain performance
and responsiveness.

2.Evolution of IT Solutions in Supply Chain Management:

The literature review traces the evolution of IT solutions in supply chain management
from traditional legacy systems to advanced digital technologies and platforms. Early
adopters of IT solutions in supply chain management, such as Wal-Mart, Dell, and
Procter & Gamble, pioneered the use of electronic data interchange (EDI), enterprise
resource planning (ERP), and supply chain management (SCM) systems to achieve
operational efficiencies and competitive advantages.
Subsequent advancements in IT, including cloud computing, big data analytics, internet
of things (IoT), blockchain, and artificial intelligence (AI), have revolutionized supply
chain management practices, enabling real-time visibility, predictive analytics, and
automation of supply chain processes. The literature review synthesizes research on the
adoption and implementation of these IT solutions in diverse supply chain contexts,
highlighting their benefits, challenges, and best practices.

10
3.Role of IT Solutions in Enhancing Supply Chain Efficiency and Resilience:
A significant body of literature examines the role of IT solutions in enhancing supply
chain efficiency, agility, and resilience. Studies by Lee et al. (2017), Ferdows et al.
(2018), and Ivanov and Dolgui (2020) emphasize the importance of IT-enabled supply
chain visibility, collaboration, and risk management in mitigating disruptions and
improving supply chain performance.

IT solutions such as advanced analytics, real-time tracking, and digital twins enable
supply chain managers to anticipate demand fluctuations, optimize inventory levels,
and mitigate supply chain risks effectively. Case studies and empirical research
demonstrate how companies leverage IT solutions to achieve leaner, more agile, and
responsive supply chains, resulting in cost savings, revenue growth, and enhanced
customer satisfaction.

4.Application of IT Solutions in Nike's Supply Chain Management:

While there is a wealth of literature on IT-enabled supply chain management in
general, limited research specifically focuses on Nike and its supply chain operations.
However, case studies, industry reports, and academic articles provide valuable
insights into Nike's strategic initiatives and innovative IT solutions deployed across its
global supply chain network.
Nike's supply chain management strategy emphasizes agility, sustainability, and
customer-centricity, leveraging IT solutions to drive operational excellence and
competitive differentiation. The literature review examines Nike's adoption of digital
technologies such as RFID, barcode scanning, predictive analytics, and mobile
applications to optimize inventory management, demand forecasting, and order
fulfillment processes.

5.Challenges and Limitations of IT-Enabled Supply Chain Management:

Despite the transformative potential of IT solutions, their implementation and adoption
are not without challenges and limitations. Research by Swink et al. (2017), Melnyk et
al. (2018), and Chopra and Sodhi (2004) highlights common challenges such as data
integration issues, cybersecurity threats, organizational resistance, and supply chain
complexity.
The literature review identifies key challenges and limitations associated with the
adoption and implementation of IT solutions in supply chain management, drawing
insights from empirical studies, practitioner reports, and industry surveys. These
challenges underscore the importance of addressing technical, organizational, and
cultural barriers to maximize the value and effectiveness of IT-enabled supply chain
management initiatives.

11
6.Future Trends and Directions in IT-Enabled Supply Chain Management:
The literature review concludes with an exploration of emerging trends, future
directions, and research gaps in IT-enabled supply chain management. With the advent
of Industry 4.0 technologies, such as robotics, autonomous vehicles, and digital twins,
the supply chain landscape is poised for further transformation and innovation.
Research on the application of blockchain technology, digital supply chain platforms,
and sustainability-driven supply chain management sheds light on future opportunities
for leveraging IT solutions to create value, foster resilience, and promote sustainability
across global supply chains. Additionally, the literature review identifies research gaps
and areas for future inquiry, including the integration of AI, machine learning, and
circular economy principles into supply chain management practices.
