AVIONIC MANUAL

I. System description:

The KFS 578A control unit provides the controls required for a single or dual Mode S
Transponder System. Microprocessor controlled circuits monitor the control unit switches,
controls and external inputs from various aircraft systems, the send status infornation to the
Mode S transponder via ARINC 429 low speed data bus.
Additional control / status signals are sent to various aircraft systems and the Mode S
transponder via discrete signals.
The KFS 548A may also be used in the tandem mode, i.e. two units conltn^ollingone WT with
each control unit displaying the same readout.
The control head is supplied with 28 VDC via 1 A circuit breaker.

TEST initiates hnctional self-test. On the mS578A all

of the display segments light for two seconds, then the
squawk code will display flight Level (altitude)
information for four seconds, then return to
"SBU" mode. The flight level is displayed in units
of one hundred feet, thus a display of 005 indicates
500 feet. If the transponder determines a failure that
will cause the system NOT to function for ATC
purposes, the control unit will blink "FAIL" in the
squawk code area of the display. The selected
transponder will be placed in the "SBY" mode.
The hnction switch will be disabled from turning
clockwise to other modes. "TST" and "SBY" will be
the only modes allowed. A different transponder must
be selected to get ATC functions to return.
The control unit will annunciate a transponder fail
when the transponder is not connected to the system.

STBY places Mode S hansponmder in STANDBY mode in

flight or on the ground. In STANDBY mode,
transponder's power is bmed on but transponder does
not transmit squitters or reply to interrogations.

ON - in flight turns on Mode S transponder to M l y activated

state.
Mode S transponder transmits squitters and replies to
Mode S and ATCRBS Mode C and Mode A
interrogations. The Mode S transponder's reply to
Mode C and Mode S interrogations does not contain
an altitude report. The transponder's reply to Mode A
interrogations contains the ATG transponder code
(normal Mode A replay).

ON - on the ground Mode S transponder squitters and replies

to Mode S interrogations. Depending on Mode S
transponder strapping, transponder replies or does not
reply to ATCRBS Mode C and Mode A interrogations.
The transponder's reply to Mode A interrogations
contains the ATC transponder code.

ALT - in flight same effect on Mode S transponder as ON

position (in flight) exept Mode S transponder reports
altitude in its Mode C and Mode S replies.

ALT - on the ground same effect on Mode S transponder as

ON position (in flight) exept Mode S transponder
reports altitude in its Mode C and Mode S replies.

TA - TCAS option, turns Mode S transponder to fully

activated state.

T A / M TCAS option, turns Mode S transponder to fully active

state.

6 FL Push-Button Switch Spring-loaded push-button switch. When pressed and released,

replaces relative altitude annunciations for intruder aircraft on
traffic display with own aircraft flight level altitude
annunciations for a period of 15 seconds. During the 15 second
period, own aircraft fight level altitude also appears on the
traffic display. After l 5 seconds, own aircraft flight level
altitude disappears from display and intruder aircraft altitude
annunciations revert back to relative altitude annunciations.

7' I / 2 switch Selects one of two Mode S transponders to be under control of

the control unit. The non-selected Mode S transponder is
placed in STANDBY mode

IV*Operation:

ep To operate the system:

l. Check circuit breaker marked "ATC" is IN.

2. Set the AVIONIC MASTER switch to the9'ON" position.
3. Turn the system on by the ON/OFF switch on the control unit.
4. Select transponder l by the 1 / 2 select switch.
5. Momentarily press the FL knob to step the cursor to the right one digit at a time.
6. Change the numerical value of the selected digit by rotating the FL knob clockwise or
counterclockwise as desired.
7. Rotate the function knob to VFR approximately 3 seconds to change the
preprogrammed VFR code.
