To better understand this lesson, answer the following questions. In three (3)
sentences, write your answer in the space provided.
1. What is meant by GMOs?
- GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism it is an “organism” that
isn't just a plant; it refers to all living things, including bacteria and fungi.
With that in mind, GMOs are living beings that have had their genetic code
changed in some way.
2. What is the purpose of genetically modifying organisms?
- Purposes of GM crops generally include resistance to certain pests, diseases, or
environmental conditions, or resistance to chemical treatments (e.g. resistance to
a herbicide). Another purpose of genetic modification of crops is to enhance their
nutritional value, as seen in the case of golden rice.
3. Why are GM foods produced?
- GM foods are developed because there is some perceived advantage either to the
producer or consumer of these foods. This is meant to translate into a product
with a lower price, greater benefit (in terms of durability or nutritional value), or
both. Initially, GM seed developers wanted their products to be accepted by
producers and have concentrated on innovations that bring direct benefit to
farmers (and the food industry.
4. Is the safety of GM foods assessed differently from conventional foods?
- Specific systems have been set up for the rigorous evaluation of GM
organisms and GM foods relative to both human health and the
environment. Similar evaluations are generally not performed for
conventional foods.
5. How is a safety assessment of GM food conducted?
- The safety assessment of GM foods generally focuses on: (a) direct health
effects (toxicity), (b) potential to provoke allergic reaction (allergenicity); (c)
specific components thought to have nutritional or toxic properties; (d) the
stability of the inserted gene; (e) nutritional effects associated with genetic
6. Are GM foods safe?
- GM foods currently available on the international market have passed
safety assessments and are not likely to present risks for human health. In
addition, no effects on human health have been shown as a result of the
consumption of such foods by the general population in the countries
where they have been approved.
7. What has WHO been doing to improve the evaluation of GM foods?
- WHO has been taking an active role in relation to GM foods. WHO, together
with FAO, has convened several expert consultations on the evaluation of
GM foods and provided technical advice for the Codex Alimentarius
Commission which was fed into the Codex Guidelines on safety
assessment of GM foods. WHO will keep paying due attention to the safety
of GM foods from the view of public health protection, in close
collaboration with FAO and other international bodies.

Apply What You Have Learned

Do you know some of the benefits and risks of using GMOs in anyways? List them down
below.

BENEFITS RISKS
● Resistance to certain diseases and ● Possibility of being toxic
insects
● A stronger tolerance to certain ● Possibility of causing allergic
weather conditions reaction
● Opportunity to increase the
nutritional value of certain food ● Could harm the environment by
impacting insects, birds, mammals,
waters, etc

Complete the diagram below by filling in the oval the benefits and risks of using GMOs.

BENEFITS RISKS
● More production of crops ● Possibility of being toxic

● More food to feed the hungry and ● Possibility of causing allergic

decrease hunger or starvation reaction

● Certain foods last longer than ● Could harm the environment by

normal impacting insects, birds, mammals,
waters, etc
● Plants are resistant to herbicides
which kill weeds ● Possibility of unknown health
concerns for humans
● Higher level of tolerance to various
environmental issues like droughts, ● Possible destruction of the natural
extreme cold, etc ecosystems

Activity 1
Instructions: Identify the benefits or risks you may take from a certain
situation given below. Write your answer on the line provided.

1. Not following instructions-

- Higher chance to be stressed.
- Higher chance to get eye bags.
BENEFITS
- Enhanced brain activity. Unlike watching television or streamed
entertainment, reading requires focus.
- Improved vocabulary. By exposing students to new words, reading can
expand vocabulary.
- Developing critical thinking.
- Increased ability to understand others.
3. Participating in class-
RISK
- Your classmates might make fun of you if your answer is not correct.
BENEFITS
- Students who participate in class have studied the material well enough to
introduce new concepts to their peers. This level of thinking goes beyond
simple comprehension of text, and can also improve memory. Participation
can also help students learn from each other, increasing comprehension
through cooperation.
4. Mediocrity or being laxed-
RISK
- a person might not have the special ability to do something well.
BENEFITS
- Your rate of learning is really rapid. So being mediocre at a lot of things) is a great
way to speed up your rate of learning.
