Biletul nr.6

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

“When the Germans invaded Amsterdam during the Second World War, Anne Frank, a young
Jewish girl, went into hiding with her family and four other people. They remained hidden in a “Secret
annexe” for two years until they were betrayed and sent to their deaths in a concentration camp. Only her
father survived. During this time Anne kept a diary which was later found and published. Her pet name
was ‘Kitty’ and she was just like any teenager.
Terrible things were happening outside. At any time of night and day, poor, helpless people were
being dragged out of their houses. Families were torn apart; man, women and children were separated.
The Christians in Holland were also living in fear because their sons were being sent in Germany.
Everyone was scared. The children in their neighbourhood ran around in shirts and wooden clogs. They
had no coats, no socks, no caps and no one to help them. Gnawing on a carrot to still their hunger pangs,
they walked from their cold houses through the cold streets to an even colder classroom.”
(The Secret Annexe)

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

“It was dark when she picked me up in her car and headed for one of the many small towns that
lie out of the city, far in the middle of the valley. Maria introduced me to her parents, sister and aunt, who
welcomed me warmly. The front room was small: it had an old TV set and a nice sofa. Gifts were piled
under a Christmas tree located in the corner of the room. From the kitchen came the most delicate aromas.
Maria’s father wanted to know all about Iran and the events that had brought me so far from my country.
He listened carefully, occasionally nodding.
He got up and went over to the window to see who could be arriving at that time of night. The
moonlight was very bright, and she saw a hearse drive up to the door. It hadn't a coffin in it; instead it was
crowded with people. The coachman sat high up on the box: as he came opposite the window he drew up
and turned his head. His face terrified her, and he said in a distinct voice, "There's room for one more."
(Room for One More)

“Newspapers, along with reporting news, instruct, entertain and give opinions, too. An important
strategy is to find the right paper that could be of interest to you. News gives facts, not the author’s
opinions. Editorials do the very opposite; you cannot expect an editorial to take sides. It reflects the
opinion of the publisher or that of the editor. You can be an excellent reader if you know what to expect
from a newspaper. You can expect to find the most important facts in the first paragraph, or the important
news to be on the front page. Students often read newspapers for a wide variety of reasons, not least of
which is to keep informed in English.
As you know, newspaper writing style tends to have three levels: Headlines, leading phrases, and
article content. Each of these has its own style. This style focuses on calling students' attention to this type
of writing on a deeper, grammatical level. It ends with students writing up their own short articles with a
follow-up which represents an opportunity for them to express themselves.”

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

“A winner is not afraid to do his own thinking and to use his own knowledge. We must know the
reality by ourselves to become a credible, responsive person, and to separate facts from opinions, not
pretending to have answers for everything. A winner listens to others, evaluates what they say, but comes
to his/her own conclusions. A winner can be spontaneous. He does not have to respond in predetermined,
rigid ways. He can change his plans when the situation calls for it. He enjoys work, play, food, other
people, and life in general. To be a winner also means that you have a certain mentality.
This mentality does not change, no matter how harsh the circumstances are. He does not give
advice, even if he is requested for such a thing. He somehow knows that doing that may be extremely
harmful. A winner only helps his friends mutually, without judgement. He is sure of his conduct, as well
as of his thinking. All these and not only make him a winner, out of an ordinary person.”

“America is made up of many different blends of cultures. These many cultures have come to
enrich and diversify the American way of life. We should not think, because history has neglected to
include the background, that America has an inferior culture. We should rather consider it a multitude of
customs, religions, literatures, and ways of thinking and living that identify its people. The blending of
cultures and people give them their originality, their tolerance and their strength.
Although the image of the "typical" American is certainly changing, it is not yet clear what impact
this will have on the nation's institutions, ideals, and values. America's founders could not have
envisioned a country in which Latinos represent more than a quarter of the population in some cities,
Buddhists and Muslims live next door to Christians and Jews, and African Americans serve as Supreme
Court justices and secretaries of state. The U.S. Constitution guarantees equal treatment under the law to
all Americans, but one of the greatest challenges of a multicultural society has been ensuring that this
guarantee truly extends to everyone.

“Many Americans are volunteering their time and efforts to help others. These volunteers do
unpaid work in schools, hospitals, and charity organizations. Some of them help raise money for non-

worker and volunteered to work with “the street children “. I had the strangest experience to discover,
bright, gentle, funny, children who, like all children of their age, had their dreams and fears. Working
and helping them made me a better person. Sometimes we get really frustrated when we are trying to do
something and we can’t figure it out.
The smart thing to do is to ask for help. But, we are stubborn – sometimes we’d rather stew than
admit we need help. How prideful. How foolish!
On the other hand, when we help someone we always end up feeling good. It doesn't matter
whether it's a big or little thing. We must qualify this statement, however. The help must be something we
are willing to give. I'm not talking about offering help because of selfish motives or resulting from
orders.”

John Wayne remains the famous cowboy whom we all admired in exciting and adventurous films.
America and the world admired and loved him for his courage, looks, charm and talent. He represented
the tough hero, the frontiers man, and the adventurer. He was the strong father who protected the children,
his troops and his friends. He spoke out in films and in politics for his beliefs, being famous for his
integrity. We represent him in our minds on horseback, in a proud posture, never afraid and always ready
o quickly take the gun to punish the wrongdoers.
John Wayne rose beyond the typical recognition for a famous actor to that of an enduring icon who
symbolized and communicated American values and ideals. By the middle of his career, Wayne had
developed a larger-than-life image, and as his career progressed, he selected roles that would not
compromise his off-screen image. By the time of his last film The Shootist, Wayne refused to allow his
character to shoot a man in the back as was originally scripted.

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

Many people probably think of salt as simply that white granular food seasoning found in a salt
shaker on virtually every dining table. It is that, surely, but it is far more. It is an essential element in the
diet of not only humans but of animals, and even of many plants. It is one of the most effective and most
widely used of all food preservatives (and used to preserve Egyptian mummies as well). Salt served as
money at various times and places, and it has been the cause of bitter warfare. Offering bread and salt to
visitors, in many cultures, is traditional etiquette. It is used in making pottery.
While we have records of the importance of salt in commerce in Medieval times and earlier, in some
places like the Sahara and Nepal, salt trading today gives a glimpse of what life may have been like
centuries ago. Alchemists use the square symbol to represent salt. "Salt," is common in the jargon of other
professions.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

A. Salt is more than something we use in order to season food.

B. Humans and animals are the only ones for whom salt is essential.
C. Salt has caused wars throughout time.
D. Salt can be used to discover things about life in the past.

The German word 'poltergeist' translates as 'noisy spirit' or 'noisy ghost'. Parapsychologists often refer
to the phenomenon using the term 'Recurrent Spontaneous Psycho-kinesis' (RSPK).
Common characteristics of the phenomenon are: the movement and hurling around of inanimate,
often extremely heavy, objects, the opening and closing of doors and windows by no visible means,
unexplained noises such as voices, moans, screams, explosions, crashes, raps, thumps, scratches and
knocks on floors, doors and walls, heavy footsteps, bed-shaking, the breaking of household objects such
as crockery, the destruction of garments, the throwing of stones, rocks and dirt, bad smells, mysterious
fires, the appearance of pools of water on floors, the malfunctioning of electrical equipment, telephone
ringing, the unexplained appearance of objects, apparitions and even physical assault. Stone throwing is
very often the first sign of poltergeist activity, with the houses of victims bombarded by stones and bricks
sometimes for days (or even weeks) before any other kind of unexplained phenomenon occurs.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

A. The poltergeist can be heard and seen.

B. The poltergeist can sing loudly and dance, causing the room to move.
C. Poltergeists call people on the phone and talk to them.
D. Poltergeists sometimes attack people physically.

At some point in time, say in second grade, two kids meet on a playground for the first time, and if
they don’t beat each other up, then a friendship grows. These innocent days pass quickly, however, and
soon these same kids learn to be more wary of how they react in social situations.
Even young children begin to use a “public face”. These two kids could be you and me or anyone we
know. Everyone has some type of mask that they use in social settings to protect their private selves from
ridicule, whether it, the ridicule, is real or imagined. Often a destructive mind-set of “us against them” can
develop when people bond in this shallow, appearances-only, type of way. So the questions is should I, or
should you, trust and act upon first impressions? No, we should not. It is better for us to let a friendship
grow with the passing of a few seasons.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

A. If children beat each other in the beginning, they will grow up as friends.
B. When children grow up, they like wearing masks.
C. Everyone pretends to be someone else in social settings.
D. People should not act according to first impressions.

2. Answer the following questions.

A. How do children become friends when they are about 7 or 8?

B. What happens with children’s social behaviour when they grow a little?
C. What is the author’s opinion about judging people?

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

Televison has a negative effect on children because they watch programs that are not meant for
their age, see commercials for products they don’t need, and miss out on playtime they do need. Little
kids watch a lot of television. Television can be great for teaching kids letters and numbers and
sometimes even manners. Kids learn other things from television, too. Besides that, they could be doing a
lot of other good things than watching television.
People get killed all the time on TV. When, for example, children are watching Sesame Street or
Barney or some other cartoon, on comes the commercial for an adult show that will be on later that night.
In those few seconds, children are exposed to theft, murder, and sex. These are all things that they
shouldn’t see. Another important question to ask about TV and small children is what they are not doing
while they are watching television. Children especially between the ages of two and five are growing very
quickly and need to exercise their growing muscles.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

A. Children tend to watch programs that are unsuitable for them.

B. Cartoons contain theft and murder that children should not see.
C. TV helps children develop muscles.
D. TV stops children from socializing with other children.

2. Answer the following questions.

B. What things can children learn from TV?
C. What can children do instead of watching TV?

Commercials are one of the biggest problems when it comes to television. Commercials advertise
shows with adult content in them. Moreover, commercials tell kids to buy all these things that they don’t
need. That’s how television pays for itself. Companies pay to put commercials on TV and they hope kids
will buy their products. The commercials tell kids that they will be happy if they buy this or the other
item. They will be like other kids and they will be liked by other kids if they have these things. It is
difficult enough for adults to tell the difference between reality and what is pretended in commercials.
Some shows on television may be educational or entertaining for children, but libraries and
schools are much better places for kids to learn. Children can learn a lot from computers, too. However,
some of the problems related to television are the same with computers.
Violence, sex and commercials are the main disadvantages of television. Little kids shouldn’t watch
much television. They should be outside playing.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

B. Children who buy things advertised on TV are better-liked by other children.

Now that the year is winding down, we are confronting an important issue. Do we want metal
detectors in our school next year or not? This issue is complex because, you know, we have had a lot of
problems with student violence on campus. At this moment anyone can walk on campus with a knife or
gun in their pocket and no one will know until the person decided to display or use the weapon. At the
same time, having metal detectors inhibits our freedom.
Every time we want to enter the school we would have to submit to an electronic search. I believe,
however, that the benefits of having metal detectors far outweigh the costs. Every time we have
something metallic on, we will have to remove it and display it to the public. This interferes with our
constitutional right to privacy. We need to protect ourselves from our own student body, visitors to
campus, and adults in the school in order to make the school a truly safe environment.

There are many different reasons why people are late getting somewhere. The first thing that
makes people late is incorrectly estimating how long it takes to do something. For example, if you think it
will only take you 15 minutes to ride your bike to school, and it really takes you 30 minutes, then you will
be late to school. Another thing that prevents people from being on time is getting distracted from the
task at hand. If you stop to talk with someone while you are riding your bike to school, you may lose
track of time and end up being late for school. Getting distracted happens much more easily if you don’t
have a watch on. Not having a watch or a clock nearby prevents people from knowing what time it is, and
can lead to tardiness.
The last thing that can make people late is something called “unforeseen circumstances”. An example
of “unforeseen circumstances” is a flat tire. If you get a flat tire on your way to school, you probably
won’t have a repair kit with you, which means you will have to walk to school. Walking takes a lot longer
that riding a bike, so guess what? You’re going to be late.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

A. People are sometimes late because they cannot appreciate correctly how long an activity will take.
B. If you have a watch with you, you have more chances of being on time.
C. If you don’t know the time you are likely to be late.
D. If you walk to school it takes less time than when you ride your bike.

You can’t go anywhere these days without hearing the buzz of mobile phones. People who have
mobile phones say that they can’t live without them, but they managed quite well before they had them.
You cannot escape them; you hear them on buses and trains, in the street, at the supermarket, even in
places where you expect it to be quiet, like cinemas, theatres and libraries.
Is there anything more annoying than having to listen to unnecessarily loud voices talking to
people who aren’t there, while you are trying to enjoy a pleasant dinner at a ‘quiet’ restaurant? I find it
rude and antisocial.
Even school kids have mobile phones now. A teacher I know told me not long ago that lessons
were often interrupted by phones ringing. More seriously, mobile phones can be dangerous.
According to the police, about a quarter of all road accidents are caused by people driving while using
mobile phones.

A. Cinemas and theatres are noisy places where you don’t hear mobile phones.
B. Mobile phones are not popular with school kids.

On a world-wide scale, forests help to slow down the effects of global warming by using up the
gas known as carbon dioxide and giving out the oxygen we need to breathe. At local neighborhood level,
trees also bring important environmental benefits. They offer shade and shelter, which in turn reduces the
amount of energy needed to heat and cool nearby buildings, at the same time, they also remove other
impurities from the air we breathe.
Urban trees are especially important because for many people they provide the only daily contact
with the natural world. What's more, urban trees also provide a home for birds, small animals and
butterflies. Without the trees we would lose the pleasure of seeing these creatures in our cities.
Regrettably, however, trees in cities are now coming under threat.
There is a limit to the level of pollution they can put up with and, down at street level, their roots
are being seriously disturbed by the digging needed to make way for modern telephone, television and
other cables.

Medical research has found that happiness has a strongly beneficial effect on health. The healing
properties of laughter are such that humour is now being used alongside more traditional courses of
treatment in some hospitals. In a London children’s hospital, for example, two clowns are provided for
the entertainment of patients. Doctors say that these clowns are successful in making the children feel
better. Their effect is more than psychological as laughter helps strengthen the immune system.
Laughter also relieves depression, which tends to make illnesses worse, and gives people the will
to fight for their illnesses themselves. It seems that when we laugh, there can be a reduction in both blood
pressure and the amount of tension in our muscles.
Although it is impossible to prove it at the moment, this may also mean that people who feel
unhappy and who are, therefore, unlikely to laugh so much, suffer more often from psychical illness.

1. Read the text again and decide if the following sentences are true (T) or false (F).

The history if the teddy bear goes back no further than 1903. In that year, a cartoon appeared in an
American newspaper showing President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear cub on a
hunting expedition. Soon after this, an enterprising toy shop owner in New York made some toy bears
and displayed them in his shop window with a sign that said ‘Teddy’s bear’. These bears proved to be so
popular that they soon sold out, and it wasn’t long before a factory was established to take advantage of
the great demand for the new toys.
At about the same time, the Steiff toy factory in Germany had introduced a range of soft toys,
made out of mohair and wood shavings, with movable heads and limbs. Given the popularity of teddy
bears in the USA, Steiff decided to begin making these as well and they were modelled on the real bears
in Stuttgart zoo. It is these early Steiff bears that are now most eagerly sought after by collectors.

Read the text below and complete the following tasks.

The T-shirt, or at least the T-shirt as we know it, was born in the theatre. In 1947, a young actor
called Marlon Brando went on stage wearing a pair of blue jeans and a bright, white T-shirt. It was the
first time the T-shirt had been seen publicly as anything but an item of underwear and it set a fashion
trend that was to last through to the end of the century.
The idea for the T-shirt came from Brando himself. He had worn one at rehearsals for the play.
The director was so impressed by the look that was created that he asked Brando to wear the shirt in the
play itself. Brando may have seen the shirt being advertised by the American company Sears Roebuck.
They had decided to market the shirt as a fashionable garment in its own right, rather than just something
to be worn for warmth beneath a denim work shirt or an army uniform.
It was Brando, however, who popularised it. A short leather jacket completed the look that was to
be adopted by teenage rebels in many countries for decades afterwards.
