Biletul nr. 25
“Far below him lay the sea, a sea bluer than any sky he had ever seen. The land stretched
in and out along the shore, up and down, all green and golden, with here and there red flowers. He stood
alone watching the waves and thinking. Where were the happy days when he used to be with their mates?
Had he really changed so much or was it only fancy? He remembered thesummer camps, his first love, the
smile on her face and his eyes brightened. It was not in vain, his life had been good in spite of all the tears.
If it hadn’t been good, then what else would have to be demonstrated? After all, all he had done was
nothing but an ordinary existence, an existence that would not surprise anyone. He felt out of a sudden a
tremendous sigh coming out from inside him. He felt like having a hot drink, which would change his
thoughts.”

Have you ever wondered why the Earth orbits the Sun and why it doesn’t fly off into space?
A force called gravity keeps Earth from flying off into space. Everything in the universe has
gravity: every galaxy, every star, every planet and moon, every building, every tree, every bug, every atom
has gravity. The gravity of a thing pulls on every other thing in the universe. Gravity pulls much harder on
nearby things than on faraway things, but even the tiniest flower tugs on the farthest galaxy. The more
massive the object, the harder it pulls at other things. Since the Sun is the greatest mass in our Solar
System, it has the strongest pull. The Sun’s gravitational pull on Earth and the other planets keeps them
from flying off into space.

Last year while I was in England, I went to a football match with an English friend. Manchester
United were playing Ipswich and no one thought Manchester could lose. I think everyone will remember
this game for the rest of their lives. Even my friend, who goes to every Manchester game, said he had
never seen anything like it. Ipswich scored four goals in the first half and everyone was sure they would
win. Manchester was losing 0 - 4. Then, in the second half, the Manchester defender, Pallister, who hardly
ever scores, scored three times. That was surprising enough, but it was nothing compared to him scoring
for the fourth time with three minutes left. Not one person remained seated anywhere in the whole stadium.
Then, with only one minute remaining, Pallister scored again and everybody went crazy. Manchester
United won 5 – 4. I am convinced there is nothing better than seeing a football match in England.

Music is a huge part of a teenager’s life. Whether it’s playing in a school band or having an
informal “garage band”, music is everywhere in a teen’s life. We just can’t live without it.
I play the trombone in the Wakefield High School band, but I also play electric guitar for my rock
band. I have to say music is my life. I decided to join the school band to learn more about the theory of
music. I wanted to learn more about each note on the page and how they play a part in every piece of
music. I then took my knowledge from that class and applied it to what I really want to do, play the guitar.
I love rock music with a passion! Ever since I was 14 years old I have been fascinated with how
much talent it takes to play the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and sing in front of a huge audience. I
have had many influences on my path to becoming a rock star, which motivated me to want to play my
guitar in front of a wide audience.

When people think of pirates, they usually imagine one-eyed men with beards and swords fighting
over buried treasure. But even in this age of satellites and instant communication, pirates still attack ships
on the high seas. The worst areas for piracy are the coasts of South America, South East Asia, and Africa.
Modern pirates are usually armed with machine guns, speedboats, and mobile phones.
Usually, a speedboat loaded with pirates will follow a cargo ship where a spy has been planted. The
spy gives them important details about location of the ship and the ship’s cargo. Often, the pirates go
straight to the captain’s safe, which usually contains thousands of dollars in cash.
The pirates’ preferred cargo is tin, oil, and aluminium. Usually, the attack is well-planned in
advance on land. As soon as the ship is successfully boarded, a deal is made to exchange the cargo for
money. After the ship is boarded, sometimes the crew is left unharmed. However, sometimes the crew is
kidnapped, or worse, murdered like the 23 crew members of the Hong Kong ship, the Cheung Son.

Today in Britain there is a disagreement over how children should be taught to be polite. Should
parents force their children to say “please” and “thank you”, for instance? Or are there alternative methods
they could use?
Most parents still think that teaching good manners to their children is essential. However, it does
seem ironic that the methods very often include bullying, pleading and threats.
On the other hand, there are some schools which have a completely different attitude. Their
philosophy is based on the idea that a small child will copy adults. In other words, adults should set a good
example and the children will follow. In addition, adults should be more tolerant. Children should not be
expected, for instance, to sit perfectly still while they are waiting for food in a restaurant.
In countries such as Brazil, children can be seen everywhere with adults and their behaviour is
nothing to be ashamed of. So, perhaps, if children in Britain were allowed to be seen more in public, they
would be much better behaved.

Gibraltar is probably the most famous rock in the world. It is not an island as many people think
but actually a small country that is connected to the Spanish mainland. Gibraltar is also perfectly located as
it separates Europe from Africa and the Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea. It is not so big though,
and only a few people live there. Finding somewhere to stay in Gibraltar can be difficult so it’s a good idea
to book a hotel before you go. Some of the hotels have their own gardens and swimming pools. The first
thing you should do when you arrive is to go on a tour of the rock. There is a cable car which will take you
to the spot where the view is absolutely beautiful. If you are interested in caves, then Gibraltar is just the
place for you, as it is full of them.
Therefore if you are looking for a different kind of holiday or you want to go on a day trip while
you are in Spain, then come to Gibraltar.

What would you do if you ran into a bear while hiking in the woods in Canada? Chances are that
you wouldn’t have to do anything. Bears usually avoid people who walk in the woods.
But what if the bear didn’t run away? And instead the bear started to approach you. What would
you do? Would you run away? That would be the wrong thing to do! You should never run away because
that might cause the bear to think that you are some kind of prey. And you can’t run faster than a bear.
Some bears can run faster than a racehorse.
Well, what should you do then? If the bear comes towards you, you should back away slowly and
make soft noises. What should you do if the bear attacks you? It depends on the kind of bear.
If it’s a grizzly you can try to climb a tree. But if the bear attacks you before that, you should ‘play dead’
and try to lie face down and protect your neck. If it’s a female black bear with cubs then playing dead is
also a good idea. However, if it’s a male black bear, you may have to fight. And don’t forget: they can
climb trees!

Agnes Bojaxhiu was born in Skopje in 1910 into a Catholic middle-class Albanian family and had a
good education. Her early life was greatly influenced by her very religious mother and a Jesuit priest at the
church next door. He often spoke to her about the work of his friends in Northern India.
At the age of 18, she decided to become a nun. On the advice of her Jesuit priest, she went first to
Dublin to join the Loretto Sisters, who had missions in India. Sister Teresa, as she was now called, went
from there to Darjeeling, and in 1931, she was sent to Calcutta. Here she taught for fifteen years at a quiet
convent high school for girls near the slum district of the city.
One day she decided to leave the convent and work outside with the poor, the hungry, the sick and
the dying.
In 1990, at the age of 80 and after 40 years of service, she had to give up her position as Mother
Superior because of ill-health. She died in 1997.

A traffic jam! What a miserable end to a miserable day! George turned on his car radio. „Heavy traffic.
Delays on the M25.” It was six o’clock. Marcia was waiting for him at home. They had tickets for the
theatre. And of course she was waiting to hear about the interviews. George was tired after his third job
interview in two days. The job in Harlow offered the best salary and the most interesting work, but he
knew he didn’t have a chance of getting that one. He had a good chance of getting the one in Peterborough,
the job with the worst pay, fewest holidays, and least interesting work. What could he do? He had to find a
job soon. Now he was stuck in all this traffic. He knew a nice little pub in Epping near the next exit.
Perhaps he should stop and rest for an hour. The traffic might be better then. But Marcia was waiting, If he
stopped, he would be too late for the theatre. But this traffic was moving so slowly. He decided to call
Marcia on his car telephone.

My friend Jones is not a very practical person. Driving along a main road one dark night he
suddenly had a flat tyre. Even worse, he discovered that he did not have a spare wheel in the back of his
car! Jones waved to passing cars and lorries, but not one of them stopped. Half an hour passed and he was
almost in despair. At last he waved to a car just like his own. To his surprise, the car actually stopped and a
well-dressed young woman got out. Jones was terribly disappointed.
How could a person like this possibly help him? The lady, however, offered him her own spare
wheel, but Jones had to explain that he had never changed a wheel in his life! She set to work at once and
fitted the wheel in a few minutes while Jones looked on in admiration.
