9/1/2021-

Abbreviation: An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or a phrase. An example of this is

the abbreviation, CPCTC. This stands for Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are

Congruent. This is an example of an abbreviation because you pronounce the abbreviation with

each letter and each letter represents a different word.

Euphemism: Euphemism is a mild or indirect word or expression substituted for one considered

to be too harsh or blunt when referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing. An example of

this is, the expression “passed away”. The expression of someone “passing away” is typically

used as a nicer and more pleasant way of saying someone died. Therefore this expression is a

type of euphemistic term.

Alliteration: Alliteration is the reoccurrence of the same letter or sound at the beginning of

adjacent or closely connected words. An example of this is, today in class my teacher was going

over tongue twisters and he had asked if anyone knew any. I knew the phrase, “If Peter piper

picked a peck of pickled peppers, how many peppers did Peter Piper pick?” This is an example

of alliteration because of the reoccurring P in front of every letter.


Exaggeration: Exaggeration is a statement that represents something as either better or worse

than it actually is. An example of this is, earlier I was talking with my dad while he was playing

the game candy crush. While playing the game he said the phrase, “This game is kicking my

a**.” This phrase is an example of exaggeration because the game is not literally, “kicking his

a**.”, instead he is just losing.

Initialism: Initialism is an abbreviation where each letter is pronounced differently, and the

word consist of the initials. An example of this is, CDC. CDC stands for Centers for Disease

Control. This is an example of initialism because CDC consists of the initials and each letter is

pronounced separately.

Cliché: A cliché is an overused phrase or opinion. An example of this is, the book They Both

Die in the End. While reading this book, one of the characters had the thought, “This is like a

nightmare.” This is considered a cliché because this thought is often used in multiple movies and

books.

Idiom: An idiom is a form of expression that is natural to a language, person, or group of people.

An example of this is, while I was scrolling on Instagram, I read a post that said, “Rise or Shine.”

This is an example of an idiom because this is a commonly used phrased that comes natural to

lots of people.

Acronym: An acronym is an abbreviation that can be pronounced as a whole word. An example

of this is, NAM. The word NAM stands for National American Miss. NAM is a type of beauty
pageant. The word itself can be used as an acronym because it is a shortened term for National

American Miss and the word is pronounced as a whole.

Abbreviation: An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word or phrase. An example of this is,

the abbreviation ASA. ASA is a mathematical term used to say Angle Side Angle. This is an

abbreviation because you pronounce each letter separately and each letter stands for a different

word.

Simile: A simile is a figure of speech that compares two things using like or as. An example of

this is, the song Replay by Iyaz. In the song it has the lyrics, “Shawty like a melody.” In this

context it is comparing the person, Shawty, to a melody. Therefore it is a simile because it’s

comparing both the options and it uses the word “like”.

Cliché: A cliché is an overused phrase or opinion. An example of this is, while people were

reading their Where I’m From Poems someone said the phrase, “First come first serve.” This is

considered a cliché because it’s a very popular and commonly used phrase.

Depth of Knowledge: Depth of Knowledge is the level of understanding that is required to

answer a question or perform an activity. An example of this is, earlier today my friend asked me

for help on his math homework. I thought the questions were very easy and simple, but he

seemed to be struggling with the questions. This is considered depth of knowledge because I

have a deeper understanding of the topic and he has a very minimal understanding of the topic.

Superstition: A superstition is an excessively credulous belief in and reverence for supernatural

beings. An example of this is, today it was raining and while I was in the car my mom saw a

rainbow and said how at the end of a rainbow there is a pot of gold. This is a superstition because

she believes in the supernatural beings of leprechauns and that they will leave mythical pots of

gold at the end of rainbows.

Cliché: A cliché is an overused phrase or opinion. An example of this is, today I was talking

with my friend when he said the phrase, “No child left behind.” This phrase is a cliché because it

is a very popular phrase which tends to be widely overused in books and movies.

Symbolism: Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. An example of this

is, in a book I’m reading called Glass Sword, there are two types of people. The Reds and the

Silvers. Overall if anyone is wearing red it symbolizes that they are part of the Reds and if

anyone is wearing silver it symbolizes that they are part of the Silvers.

Stereotype: A stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a

particular type of person or thing. An example of this is, the idea of a dumb blonde. In today’s

stereotypical standards I have heard the phrase, dumb blonde, being used many types, but overall

this phrase is a stereotype because stereotypically if you are blonde people might consider you

dumb.

Pop Culture Reference: A pop culture reference is a direct or indirect reference related to

something pop culture. An example of this is, today in my chemistry class we were watching a

video by a YouTube channel named, “Myth Busters”. While hearing the title a student in my

class pointed out the fact that the name sounds a lot like the famous movie series, Ghost Busters.

Therefore this can be considered a pop culture reference because it is relating to the movie Ghost

Busters.

Idiom: An idiom is a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible

from those of the individual word. An example of this is, the phrase cut the mustard. This is an

idiom because they do not literally mean to cut the mustard, instead the meaning is to reach or

surpass the desired standard or performance.

Symbolism: Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. An example of this

is, the batman symbol. The batman symbol is a picture of a bat and it typically represents that

batman is coming or is already there. Therefore it is symbolism because by seeing a bat or a bat

symbol it automatically brings the thought of batman.

Idiom: An idiom is a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible

from those of the individual words. An example of this is, the phrase, “How do you like them

apples?” This is an idiom because it is a group of words that has a meaning that is not it’s literal

meaning. For example this idiom means to mock at someone who received surprising

information and is ridiculing the situation.

SAS. SAS stands for Side Angle Side. This is an abbreviation because the word pronounces each

letter separately and each letter stands for a different word.

Idiom: An idiom is a group of words established by usage as having a meaning not deducible

from those of the individual word. An example of this is, the phrase suck it up buttercup. This

phrase is an idiom because they do not mean to literally suck it up and instead, they are saying

more to deal with it or move on.

the abbreviation SSS. SSS is another mathematical term which stands for Side Side Side. This is

considered an abbreviation because each letter is pronounced separately, and each letter stands

for a different letter.

Sarcasm: Sarcasm is the use of irony to mock or convey contempt. An example of this is, today

I was on the phone with a friend, and they had asked me if I could hear them. Instead of saying

yes, I said no in a sarcastic tone. This is sarcasm because I was mocking them with the fact that if

I couldn’t hear them then there would be no point in asking me such a question, as I wouldn’t be

able to respond.

Pop Culture Reference: A pop culture reference is a direct or indirect reference relating to

something pop culture. An example of this is, me and my friends where deciding on what to
wear for Halloween and we all decided on a group Monster High theme. This is an example of a

pop culture reference because we all wanted to reference the iconic and popular Monster High

show and movie series.

Superstition: A superstition is an excessively credulous belief in and reverence for supernatural

beings. An example of this is, I was with my grandma when she noticed I had an eyelash on my

cheek. She got it off and told me to blow it and make a wish. This is a superstition because she is

believing in the fact that blowing on an eyelash will give me a wish.

Juxtaposition: Juxtaposition is the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with

contrasting effect. An example of this is, today I was walking when I noticed someone who was

wearing black pants and a white shirt. This is an example of juxtaposition because typically the

two colors black and white seem to be the opposite of each other.

Superstition: A superstition is an excessively credulous belief in and reverence for supernatural

beings. An example of this is, the time 11:11. Whenever I notice the time 11:11 I typically make

a wish and tell others to make a wish because to me a good superstition is that wishing on 11:11

will make your wish come true.

Initialism: Initialism is an abbreviation that consist of initial letters and is pronounced

separately. An example of this is, the initial CDL. CDL stands for Commercial Driver’s license.

This is an example of initialism because the letters are pronounced separately, and it only

consists of the initials of the phrase.


Idiom: An idiom is a group of words established by usage by having a meaning of not deducible

from those of the individual word. An example of this is, today I was playing a board game with

my friends when one of them said the phrase, “You snooze you lose!” This is an example of an

idiom because the group of words being used is not the actual meaning of the phrase.
