Armature Resistance Measurement of a Synchronous Generator

Objective:
To obtain the armature parameters (Ra and Xa) depending on the O.C.T,
S.C.T and armature resistance test

THEORETICAL REVIEW:
The motors windings resistance cause internal voltage drops that reduce
their efficiency. Therefore it must be as low as possible. It is calculated by
applying known DC voltages and measuring the resulting current flows.

Tools of Experiment:
1 x synchronous machine.
1 x speed sensor.
1 x rotation source (induction motor ).
1 x AC supply. 1 x voltmeter.
1 x ammeter.
Connection wires.
Procedure:
1. connect the circuit as shown in the figure below. 2. take the reading of
voltmeter and ammeter
RDC=2 Ra
=VDC/IDC
Ra= VDC/(2 IDC)
Results:

Discussion:
1. Comment on the shape of the curves you have obtained and state why a DC separately
excited generator is called a "constant voltage generator".
2. If the generator's armature resistance is 1.6 2, use its value to obtain the "internal
characteristics".
3. Why does the internal voltage (load voltage) decrease with increase of the load current?
4. If the load resistance R is 50 2, show how you can locate the operating point on the
external characteristics. #Notes: The load internal characteristics is a relationship
between the generated voltage Eg and the armature current Ia. Eg = V₁+It Ra &
5. Determine the value of generator voltage regulation at full load.
