We use ‘how many’ to ask about the quantity and amount of a noun. The noun
that comes after is always a plural noun. We use ‘how many’ at the start of an
interrogative sentence to ask about the specific quantity of the noun. We answer
such questions with a specific number, not ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
• Do you eat bananas for breakfast? • How many bananas do you eat for breakfast?
Yes, I do. I eat three bananas.
We use ‘how much’ to ask about the quantity of uncountable nouns like bread,
milk and cheese. The noun that comes after ‘how much’. We can answer such
questions using suitable units. (Units: cup, glass, loaf, piece)
• How much milk do you drink a day? • How much money do you have?
I drink two cups of milk a day. I have ten dollars.

We use ‘some’ and ‘any’ to refer to quantities or amounts that are not large. We
use both ‘some’ and ‘any’ with countable nouns and uncountable nouns. We
usually use ‘some’ with affirmative sentences and ‘any’ with negative sentences
or interrogative sentences.

Tense changes according to the time an event takes place. We use the present
tense for facts or everyday activities. We use the past tense when we talk about
events that happened in the past, as in yesterday, last week, last month, etc.

We use the present continuous tense for events that are going on now. We use
