How Many / How Much

‘How many’ + plural noun ~? How many oranges are there?


How many brothers do you have?

We use ‘how many’ to ask about the quantity and amount of a noun. The noun
that comes after is always a plural noun. We use ‘how many’ at the start of an
interrogative sentence to ask about the specific quantity of the noun. We answer
such questions with a specific number, not ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

• Do you eat bananas for breakfast? • How many bananas do you eat for breakfast?
 Yes, I do.  I eat three bananas.

‘How much’ + material noun ~ ? How much water do you need?


How much bread do they buy?

We use ‘how much’ to ask about the quantity of uncountable nouns like bread,
milk and cheese. The noun that comes after ‘how much’. We can answer such
questions using suitable units. (Units: cup, glass, loaf, piece)

• How much milk do you drink a day? • How much money do you have?
 I drink two cups of milk a day.  I have ten dollars.

Mr Song: Good morning.


Host: What do we need for pancakes, Mr Song?
Mr Song: We need pancake flour, milk, eggs and blueberries.
Host: How much flour do I put in the bowl?

Quantitative Adjectives

‘many’ + plural noun There are many mangos.


‘much’ + uncountable noun We need much water in summer.

We add ‘many’ and ‘much’ in front of nouns to refer to large quantities or


amounts. We use ‘many’ with the plural form of countable nouns and ‘much’ with
uncountable nouns.

• They sell many plates. • My dogs eat much food.


• She has many children. • There’s much rain in the country.

‘some’ + noun (plural) We have some oranges. (positive)


‘any’ + noun (plural) I do not have any money. (negative)

We use ‘some’ and ‘any’ to refer to quantities or amounts that are not large. We
use both ‘some’ and ‘any’ with countable nouns and uncountable nouns. We
usually use ‘some’ with affirmative sentences and ‘any’ with negative sentences
or interrogative sentences.

Present, Past and
Continuous Tense

Present tense: facts, everyday life I don’t like fast food.


Past tense: yesterday, last week, this morning, etc.
She had a headache this morning.

Tense changes according to the time an event takes place. We use the present
tense for facts or everyday activities. We use the past tense when we talk about
events that happened in the past, as in yesterday, last week, last month, etc.

• I drink a cup of milk every day. • Tom met Alice yesterday.


• She doesn’t have any pets. • Did you visit the poor children?

Present continuous tense: am / are / is + ~ing She is playing hockey now.

We use the present continuous tense for events that are going on now. We use

time in the past. We show the past continuous tense by using <past tense of the
