Shading is a technique used in art to create the illusion of depth,
form, and texture in a drawing or painting. It involves using
different values of color or tone to represent the way light interacts
with objects
CAST SHADOW
HIGH LIGHT

HALFTONE

REFLECTED LIGHT SHADOW EDGE

Halftone
It is the area between the shadow edge and the fully illuminated
area. It represents the gradual transition from light to shadow. The
halftone is usually lighter than the cast shadow but darker than the
fully illuminated area.

Reflected light
It is the light that bounces off nearby surfaces and illuminates the
shadowed area. It helps to soften the shadow and prevent it from
appearing too dark or flat. Including reflected light in shading adds
depth and realism to the artwork.
Cast shadow
The cast shadow is the dark area that is created when an object
blocks the light source. It is the darkest part of the shadow and helps
to define the shape and position of the object.

Shadow edge
The shadow edge is the boundary between the cast shadow and the
illuminated area. It is where the transition from light to shadow
occurs. Paying attention to the shadow edge helps to create a sense
of depth and realism in the shading.
Full Light
It is the area that is directly illuminated by the light source. It is the
brightest part of the drawing or painting and usually has the highest
value. Understanding the full light helps to establish the overall
lighting and contrast in the artwork.
