Describe word relationships and nuances in word meanings, including relating them to their
opposites and distinguishing shades of meaning in similar or related words, including nouns,
verbs, and adjectives. Identify relationships and nuances in word meanings to determine real-life
connections between words and their use.

such as "What is the synonym of happy?" and wait for student’s
responses.
The teacher will show the video shades of meaning.
The teacher will write "sip" on sheet of poster board and use think
aloud to model how to think of words have a similar meaning.
The teacher will write the words as she says them aloud.
Guided Practice The teacher will write the words "frolic," "scour," or "munch" on

that have similar meanings.

If the student does not know the meaning of a word, the teacher
will aid the student in discovering the meaning.

Together with the student they will develop a list of words.

Independent Practice The student will use the Shades of Meaning task cards to complete

The student will be instructed to go through the cards and record


the answer on the recording sheet.

Closure (1 pts) The teacher will review the recording sheet with the student
providing positive corrective feedback.

The teacher will remind the student that synonyms are words that
have the same or similar meaning and often vary in intensity.

Assessment (2 pts) The teacher will quiz the student on knowledge of synonyms using
the Shades of Meaning video shown on the desktop computer.

Connections/ Jaymes likes Pokemon and Fortnite. The teacher will explain that
Extensions just like the characters in those games, a meaning can become
more or less powerful based on the word that is used.

Writing Component Jaymes will chose three words he learned today and write a
(3 pts) sentence using each one.
