ASSIGNMENT L2
INSTRUCTIONS:
• Tab 2 contains a master spreadsheet for assigning Solar Decathlon projects to each team and team
member.
• The second row of Tab 2 contains links to the categories of information in the Solar Decathlon project
assigned to each team.
• Tabs 3 through 11 contain sheets where information is entered each of the nine key categories
addressed by each Solar Decathlon team.
• Tab 12 Contains Solar Package Links for each of the Teams, the same links found on Tab 2 summarized
by category.
• Team Members should do the following:
1. They should be assigned one or more of the nine categories and using the links for these category
sources in the online Solar Decathlon literature (Tab 2);
2. Enter their name at the top of their assigned Tabs;
3. Draft brief survey of those categories and type, cut and/or past outlines, summaries, and exhibits
from their Solar Decathlon House in assigned Tabs 3 though 9 of thier respective copies of the file ;
4. Transmit their files to the team leader for assembly into a master Excel file of L2 sufficiently in
advance to allow their leader to assemble them into the master file and submit it before the deadline.
Communication with the leader is essential for this process to work properly.
INSTRUCTIONS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS - CONT'D

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Team Leader should do the following:
1. In Tab 1 (above) enter the Team number and Leader Name;
2. In Tab 2 of Team's section of Leader's Excel file enter the first name of the leader(if different from
that suggested) ;
3. Assign Tab categories to members and place an "X"of the cell of categories corresponding to
categories assigned team members;
4. cut and paste copes of the draft member surveys provided by team members in applicable tabs of
themaster Excel file of L2.
5. Rename file as follows: TEAM X.L2.XLSX substituting their team number for the "X".
6. Uploade the master Excel file to Canvas by the scheduled deadline. Only one file should be
submitted per team.
If the team leader is not available another member of the team should be delegated to do these tasks.

OBJECTIVES OF ASSIGNMENT:
1. To assign a project for study by each team;
2. To assign specific categories of information on this project for review by members of the teams;

3. To glean preliminary information from assigned categories of the Solar Decathlon Project;
4. To begin organizing this information into draft narratives, exhibits, templates, and references for
further use in producing the narratives, schematics, and quantitative takeoffs for the draft and final
term paler and slide presentation.
TAB LINKS
An outline of the categories in the tabs is contained below. Each of the Tab titles has a hyperlink to the
applicable Tab. The literature to be used in filling out the assigned tab can be located by clicking on the
link to the Solar Decathlon project category at the top of the team box corresponding to the "X"
assigned to each team member. Team members should review the literature, enter their name at the
top of the assigned Tab pages and insert the survey information gleened from the website below the
name in that Tab. Be brief for this assignment. You are just geting started in your study and research.

Outline major features in this category.

• The senior project team was made up of students, which included: the building design and construction, interior
design, as well as the construction management departments.
• All-eletric home was constructed in Ogden, Utah
• 2,540 sq. ft. home, 72 hr emergency battery backup, usage monitored by Solar Edge App and Emporia Vue app
• "We wanted to prove that you can build a net zero home without it ' "sticking out" ' in order to appeal to a broad
audience . . . Our home meets the demands of large families, multi-generational families and potential AHU
opportunities".
• Overhangs nearly eliminate solar heat gain, eliminated south windows, limited all other directions of windows
• Attempted to make the home feel bigger / more spacious than it actually is, the home also accommodates for
ADA accessibility
• Ribbon cutting ceremony was held October 13, 2020 ; in the midst of covid-19 they safely held tours and
cautiously gathered
• To showcase the materials used to build the home, "the kiosk" was available in the detached garage for those
wanting to interact and learn more, various elements were available on display

The 2,540 square foot home, comprising 1,270 square feet on the main level and a fully
finished basement, is designed with advanced features for energy efficiency and resilience.
It incorporates portable battery backup technology, ensuring critical loads can be sustained
for up to 72 hours in emergencies. The solar array not only offsets the home's energy usage
but also provides additional power to charge an electric vehicle for daily use. Designed to
blend in with the historical architecture of the neighborhood, the house showcases how
period-style homes can achieve a net-zero energy lifestyle. Strategic design elements, such
as large overhangs and window placement, optimize solar heat gain in winter while
minimizing it in summer. The home is affordable to operate, with estimated annual energy
costs of just over $100. Technology such as Variable Refrigerant Flow HVAC, Air Source
Heat Pump Water Heating, and Energy Recovery Ventilation ensures continuous fresh air
supply and efficient heating and cooling. Constructed with Insulated Concrete Forms for the
foundation and Structural Insulated Panels for walls, the home achieves high R-values and
minimal thermal bridging. It meets rigorous energy efficiency standards, evidenced by its
Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index score. With Energy Star appliances, water
sense certification, and LED lighting throughout, the home sets a benchmark for extreme
energy efficiency and sustainability.

AFFORDABILITY

Outline major features in this category.

Affordability goes hand in hand with the financial feasibility of any project. This project is finically responsible
because the house can generate its own energy completely without the need for outside flow.

One of the biggest factors related to affordability is what materials you use to build the house, obviously picking
out cheap materials with strong traits is key. That’s exactly what they did, they used SIPS or a Structurally
Integrated Panel System for the framing which made the project much more affordable. They also selected
Insulated concrete forms (ICF), saving them $15,000 in supplies.

The Plumbing system also used less material than most because of the way they wired it across, using less material
and less labor. It also act like a battery in the day with the use of a heat pump connected to the panels above,
storing excess energy than can be used when needed

The median list price per square foot is $247.0sf in Utah

The true value for the project came to $202.36sf in Utah
So we came in under the median for a house that was valued at a total of $514,018.88

Overall, our project came in almost $2,000 under budget, our final expenses came out to $65,984.16
Some of those savings where most noteble from...

Initial Bid VS actual contracted cost

Tightening the schedule
Leveraged subcontractor relationships

This particular lot sat empty for nearly 10 years after a dilapidated 4-plex was torn down.

the market potential of the all-ekectruc home particularly in regions like the Wasatch Front of Utah. Despite the
challenges faced during construction, such as dealing with buried debris, aquifer issues, and infrastructure
replacement costs, the finished product offers numerous appealing features.

The home's design emphasizes energy efficiency and sustainability without sacrificing aesthetics or comfort. Its net-
zero capabilities, achieved through solar panels and efficient energy usage, make it highly attractive to
environmentally conscious buyers. Additionally, the incorporation of features like ample daylighting, cross
ventilation, and thermal mass advantages enhances the living experience while reducing reliance on artificial
lighting and HVAC systems.

The strategic placement of the living spaces to capitalize on views of the Rocky Mountains adds further desirability.
By blending sustainability with affordability, the home appeals to a wide audience, including large families, multi-
generational households, and those seeking affordable housing options.

The cost-effectiveness of the home, both in terms of construction expenses and long-term utility savings, positions
it as a viable solution in the Utah housing market. The ability to mass-produce the home due to its pre-
manufactured parts and simple design further amplifies its potential impact on residential energy efficiency efforts
and the renewable energy sector.

The sale of the home above median prices for the area indicates strong market demand for such properties.
Comparable sales suggest a significant potential market value, ranging from $439,420 to $662,940. With out-of-
pocket construction expenses totaling $314,595.46, the home represents a profitable investment while also
contributing positively to sustainability and energy efficiency goals.
