LEARNING
OBJECTIVES
WHAT IS SCIENCE?
learning new facts (discoveries)
solving problems (scientific methods)
the intellectual and practical activity
encompassing the systematic study
of the structure and behavior of the
physical and natural world through
observation and experiment
(Oxford dictionary)
WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY?

laws to the solution of practical problems
THE BIRTH OF S&T
2 important periods of 20th century
history:
end of WW1 and start of WW2 “Interwar
Period”
after WW2 “Cold War”
became increasingly concerned about
the impacts and drawbacks of conflicts
and the role that science and
technology play.
increased interests on the links
between scientific knowledge and,
technological systems produced out of
this knowledge and society.
IS SCIENCE DANGEROUS?
studying STS today happens at a
time when there is overwhelming
fear and distrust of science
”science is not the same as
technology”
there is anxiety whether
scientists are driven by wisdom
and social responsibility, not
ambition, in the pursuit of their
research.
SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE SCIENCE
refers to the ethical practice of scientific
research and technological innovation
that takes into consideration the broader
societal impact, values, and well-being.
PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF SCIENCE

Fostering informed decision-

making, promoting scientific
literacy, and building a society
that can engage with and
support scientific advancements.
EMERGING ETHICAL DILEMMAS
issues in which a difficult choice has to
be made between two or more options.
Ethical dilemmas in science and
technology often revolve around
questions of responsibility, privacy, and
potential unintended consequences.
SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY & SOCIETY
is to prepare students and future professionals for the great
moral and ethical challenges that science and technology
bring into our lives and the lives of those we care for.
There are certainly great reasons why we, in particular you as students,
whether science or non-science majors, should study science and
technology and their implications to the society.
