Software Project Management
Software project management is a specialized discipline within the realm of project
management that focuses on planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing
software development projects.

It encompasses the systematic management of resources, budget and time to

ensure the successful completion of a software project.

02: Project Management Process.

03: Project Management knowledge areas.

04: The strategic role of projects.
05: Project Constraints.

Define Project Management
A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service,
or result.
(PMBOK 2017, p. 4)

• Create a specific and unique product or service

• Temporary:
• Specific start & finish
• Temporary organization
• Require multi-disciplinary coordination
• Constrained by time, cost, or resources

Damith Gangodawilage, 2023

Define Project Management
Project management is the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques
to project activities to meet the project requirements.

Project management is accomplished through the appropriate application and

integration of the project management processes identified for the project.

(PMBOK 2017, p. 10)

Baseline Project Management
Scope baseline. The approved version of a scope statement, work breakdown structure
(WBS), and its associated WBS dictionary, which is used as a basis for comparison.

A scope baseline is needed to enable the development of the project schedule and
thus the management of the project and to prohibit scope creep.

Scope Creep
The undocumented stepwise expansion of the original baseline of the scope of a
project, product, or service without agreed-upon changes to the original constraints.

Scope creep has been found to be a major contributor to the failure of projects,
respectively to the exceeding of cost and schedule and to the missing quality objectives or
standards.
(PMBOK 2017 p. 87)
Damith Gangodawilage, 2023
Baseline Project Management
Schedule baseline. The approved version of the schedule model that is used as a basis
for comparison to the actual results.

The schedule baseline is a completed project schedule with start date,

intermediate milestones, and end date that has been approved and accepted by all
stakeholders
A schedule baseline is needed to allow for tracking of project progress and enable
an early warning if a delay in the planned completion of the project is threatening.

(PMBOK 2017 p. 87)

Damith Gangodawilage, 2023

Baseline Project Management
Cost baseline. The approved version of the time-phased project budget that is used as
a basis for comparison to the actual results.
The cost baseline is the approved version of the time-phased project budget, excluding
any management reserves, which can only be changed through formal change control
procedures and is used as a basis for comparison to actual results. It is developed as a
summation of the approved budgets for the different scheduled activities

A cost baseline is needed be able to monitor and control the actual costs of the project
at the end of selected periods, to recognize deviations early enough to take corrective
actions, and to make reasonable predictions of expected costs for the next period and
for the expected costs at completion of the project

(PMBOK 2017 p. 87)

Damith Gangodawilage, 2023

Project Constraints
Any project is subject to a number of constraints or factors that influence the project.
Both project planning and project execution are influenced by the environmental
conditions created or caused by these factors

Damith Gangodawilage, 2023

Project Management Process
The project life cycle is managed by executing a series of project management activities
known as project management processes. Every project management process
produces one or more outputs from one or more inputs by using appropriate project
management tools and techniques. The output can be a deliverable or an outcome.
Outcomes are an end result of a process.

(PMBOK 2017, p. 22)

Damith Gangodawilage, 2023
Project Management Process
The main project management processes are:
➢ Initiating processes
Those processes performed to define a new project or a new phase of an existing project by obtaining
authorization to start the project or phase
➢ Planning processes
Those processes required to establish the scope of the project, refine the objectives, and define the
course of action required to attain the objectives that the project was undertaken to achieve
➢ Executing processes
Those processes performed to complete the work defined in the project management plan to satisfy the
project requirements.
➢ Monitoring and controlling processes
Those processes required to track, review, and regulate the progress and performance of the project;
identify any areas in which changes to the plan are required; and initiate the corresponding changes.
➢ Closing processes
Those processes performed to formally complete or close the project, phase, or contract

The strategic role of projects
A strategic plan provides a unified direction for the project itself and for the
organization producing it. Such a plan defines the fundamental goals and objectives
in specific terms and providing a basic long-range framework into which all the other
forms of planning should mesh.
