Spelling + grammar (documents can be found on CANVAS)
Additional wordlists CANVAS (see CANVAS)

IMPORTANT REMARK :
This exam will be organized online (i.e. this will be a CANVAS exam, not an exam on
paper).

1 Vocabulary (-/20)

You are expected to know the vocabulary from the book Brook-Hart, Guy (2013). Business
Benchmark Upper-Intermediate Student’s book. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
(chapters 13-24). Take a close look at the glossary, the additional wordlists and the
vocabulary exercises. Check the spelling of the different words since you should be able to
spell the words correctly. Make sure you know the words that you can find in the additional
wordlists that are stored on CANVAS.

At the written exam, vocabulary exercises can be offered in different ways: multiple choice;
match up; choose from the list given and fill in; translate; find the word that corresponds to
this definition; etc.

2 Writing skills (-/20) : Business writing or creative writing

You might be asked to write a coherent, well-structured text about a topic from the book.
OR You might be asked to write an email, a business letter (e.g letter of complaint), memo,
report or proposal.

If a length is indicated (e.g. 250 words), you will be asked to count the number of words in
your text and write down the total word count below your text. No word count = 0

In your text you may have to include and underline (or circle) a number of words or language
focus points (grammatical elements) given to prove you understand their meaning and can
use them in context.

Your text will be quoted on:

- content (interesting, truthful, logical, well-illustrated with examples, valid arguments)
- structure (clear layout, introduction, body, conclusion, use of signalling words, linking
words)
- grammar (correct and varied sentence patterns: see grammar sections in your book)
- vocabulary (correct and varied)
- spelling (all words must be spelled correctly, sms-style, e.g. UR, is not acceptable)

When writing texts or emails, you will have to respect the specific layout and structure
required, and prove that you can distinguish informal from formal language.
