PART A—(10 X 2 = 20 marks)
1. Differentiate Density and Viscosity.
2. Define buoyancy.
3. What are the types of fluid flow ?
4. What are the assumptions made in deriving Bernoulli’s equation?
5. What is dimensional homogeneity?
6. What is an undistorted model?
7. Compare HGL and TEL.
8. Draw the shear stress and velocity distribution diagram for the viscous flow in a circular condiut
9. How the drag force is different from a lift force.
10. Define boundary layer.

PART – B [(13x5= 65 marks]

11.(a). A sliding fit cylindrical body of diameter 399mm, length 200mm and mass 3.5kg drops
vertically down inside a hollow cylinder of 400mm internal diameter at a constant velocity of
0.05 m/s . Calculate the viscosity of oil filled in the space between the cylinders. (13)
(Or)
(b). Define the total pressure and centre of pressure and if a circular plate 2.5m diameter is
immersed in water with its greatest and least depth below the free surface being 3m and 1m
respectively. Find (i) the total pressure on the one face of the plate and (ii) the position of the
centre of pressure. (13)

12.(a) Compute the form of velocity potential if exist with proof and also find stream function in a
two dimensional incompressible flow if the fluid velocity components are given by u= x-4y and
v = -y-4x. (13)
(Or)
(b) A horizontal venturimeter with inlet diameter 250mm and throat diameter 120mm is used to
measure the flow of oil of specific gravity 0.85. The discharge of oil through the venturimeter is
80 liters/sec. Find the reading of oil-mercury differential manometer .Take Cd=0.97. (13)

13.(a) Explain the procedure for dimensional analysis by Buckingham’s law method . (13)

(b) A 1: 64 model is constructed of an open channel in concrete which has Manning’s N= 0.014.
Find the value of N for the model. (13)
14.(a) Drive the expression for the Hagen Poiseulle formula . (13)
(Or)
(b)Derive the expression for the loss of head due to sudden enlargement and sudden contraction
of a pipe (13)

15.(a) For the velocity profile for laminar boundary layer u/U = (3/2)(y/ẟ) – (1/2)(y/ẟ)3.
Determine
the boundary layer thickness and shear stress in terms of Reynolds number. (13)
(Or)
(b)A flat plate 1.5m x 1.5m moves at 13.89 m/s in stationary air of density 1.15kg/m 3 . If the
coefficient of drag and lift are 0.15 and 0.75 respectively . Determine the lift force, drag force,
resultant force and the power required to keep the plate in motion . (13)

PART – C (1x 15 = 15 marks)

16.(a) A pipe of diameter 0.4m and length 2000m is connected to a reservoir at one end. The other
end of the pipe is connected to a junction from which two pipes of length 1000m and diameter
300m run in parallel. These parallel pipes are connected to another reservoir, which is having
level of water 10m below the water level of the above reservoir. Determine the total discharge
if f=0.015. Neglect minor losses. (15 )
(Or)
(b). With the basic assumptions derive the Bernoulli’s Equation from the Euler’s equation. (15)
