character. The qualities, for example, love, trust, kindness, empathy, correspondence,

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

When they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get
up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I
tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”

So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt,
where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had
said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”

When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and
he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years
old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. Then
what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:

“A voice is heard in Ramah,

weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted,
because they are no more.”
The Gospel of the Lord…
Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ!

REALIZING PARADISE
How do we describe Joseph, the legal father of Jesus?
Not one word of Joseph is recorded. The Sacred writing talks as it were of what
Joseph "did" : "by their natural products you should know them." Humble and fidelity to
Jesus Christ and His Favored Mother is the mark of Joseph. The covered up life of Joseph
empowers us to look for sacredness of life through the standard event of everyday life.
Joseph’s domestic virtues: industriousness, listening, patience, and sacrifice, detachment
from material possessions, purity of heart, and faithfulness to grace.

What were the circumstances behind the marriage of Mary and Joseph?

Mary had been engaged to Joseph but, before they came to live together, she was found
to be pregnant.
Joseph as a righteous man, did not want to expose her to public disgrace, and instead
planned to send her away quietly. He was about to do this, when in a dream an angel told
him not to be hesitant to take Mary as his wife, for the child conceived in her was from the
Holy Spirit. He did as the Lord had directed him – he took her as his wife.
The parents of Jesus were both loyal and faithful to God who called them to cooperate in
the story of salvation.

Why were Joseph and Mary worth obeying?

Jesus must have proudly looked up to Joseph who cherished and protected Him as
his own son for some reasons. Joseph acted instantly and unquestioningly, in two very
mysterious and difficult situations. The first was to take Mary as his wife in spite of her
being pregnant, while still only betrothed to him, because she had conceived by the Holy
Spirit, and accept her child as his own son by giving him the name chosen by God
Himself. The second, he received again in dreams that enabled him to protect the child’s
life from danger. He trusted and followed this divine guidance fully, whether to take the
child, whose life was threatened by King Herod.
