Why Smoking is Bad to us and the Environment

One of the main reasons our surroundings have a foul smell is because of smoking.
Cigarette smoking causes environmental pollution by releasing toxic air pollutants into the
atmosphere. The cigarette butts also litter the environment, and the toxic chemicals in the
residues seep into soils and waterways, thereby causing soil and water pollution, respectively.
Animals and plants that come in contact with or absorb the toxic substances from cigarette
residues are affected as well. Furthermore, smoking is also addictive and expensive. In recent
years there have been articles and proof that show 1 billion people, nearly 20% of the world's
population then. About 800 million of those smokers were male and the others were female.
Interestingly, when people hear about cigarette smoking, they often think of the health risks it
has on the human body. Many fail to look at the critical side topic, which pertains to how it
harms the environment. There are also serious impacts of cigarette smoking on human health
and the environment, such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic
bronchitis.
Moreover, products like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and e-cigarettes also add to the build-
up of plastic pollution. Roughly 4.5 trillion cigarette filters pollute our oceans, rivers, city
sidewalks, parks, soil, and beaches every year,” said Dr. Ruediger Krech, Director of Health
Promotion at WHO.Cigarettes kill more than 8 million people each year. More than 7 million
of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the result of
non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. In addition, Cigarette smoke contains
more than 7,000 chemicals, 70 of which are known to cause cancer. Nearly 9 out of 10
smokers start before age 18 and almost all start smoking by age 26. Thus, if anyone is a slave
to cigarettes, they need to understand that it is never too late to stop smoking. Why smoke
when you can breathe air for free rather than smoking at a price? Quitting smoking has
immediate and long-term benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and
improving health in general. As a result of quitting smoking, it improves your health status
and enhances your quality of life. It reduces the risk of premature death and can add as much
as 10 years to life expectancy. So if I were you quit smoking Now!
