Use the Microsoft Word application for this exercise but before
you start encoding, set the font to
Courier New, the font style to Regular (none of Bold, Italic, Underlined is
selected), and the font size to 10. This ensures that the text in your exercise is the same as in
this handout. For your work not to appear tiny on your screen, set the Zoom View to 200% by clicking the +
on the lower right corner of the screen. This keyboarding exercise is based on the lessons found at the Touch
Typing site. (URL: http:/www.typingweb.com/tutor/lesson/index/id/316/)

In these lessons the terms typing and keyboarding are used interchangeably. Note that others might consider the two
different, because they say that typing is to typewriter while keyboarding is to keyboards. But the fact is, the layout of
both a typewriter and a QWERTY keyboard is the same. So here, in these lessons, they are considered one and the
same. Further, here in these lessons, when we refer to keyboards we're always referring to QWERTY keyboard.

Separate each lesson with a blank line, no need to label each lesson. Save your work in your folder in your computer.

1. The Home Row

The first principle of typing is to always return your fingers to the home keys when you are not typing. The home
keys will be the reference point from which you will learn the positions of all the other keys. Most keyboards (if not all)
have markers (small bumps) at the bottom part of the f and the j keys to help you find the home keys without the
need to look at the keys.

As you begin these keyboarding lessons, remember to focus on

accuracy. Aim for 100% accuracy and speed will come with practice.

Keyboarding Lessons

The Right Hand

The home keys for the right hand are: jkl;
Position your right hand so that your R1 finger is placed on the j key, your R2 finger is on the k key, your R3 finger is
on the l key, and your R4 finger is on the ; key.

Your hand should be raised above the keyboard with your fingers curving down to point directly on the
corresponding keys. This will make it easier for you to move your fingers without moving your hands. Take a
moment to properly position your right hand before continuing. It is very important to develop good habits early in
your exercises.

Our first keyboarding lesson introduces 2 home row keys for the right hand: j k

jjj jjj kkk kkk jjj kkk jkj jkj kjk kjk jjj kkk jk jk kj kj jj kk

Now let's learn the other two keys: l ;

lll lll ;;; ;;; lll ;;; l;l l;l ;l; ;l; lll ;;; l; l; ;l ;l ll ;;

Great, let's put all four keys together: j k l ;

The Left Hand

The home row keys for the left hand are: fdsa
Position your left hand so that your L1 finger is on f, your L2 finger is on d, your L3 finger is on s and your L4 finger is on a. Check that your left
hand is raised and your fingers are curved and pointed down at the keys.

We will begin with the first 2 left hand keys: f d

fff fff ddd ddd fff ddd fdf fdf dfd dfd fff ddd fd fd df df ff dd
Now for the final 2 left hand keys: s a

H and G
The keys we have covered so far can all be typed without moving your fingers from the home keys position. Now it is time to learn how to move
your fingers off the home keys to reach the h and g keys. To reach these new keys, you will need to move your R1 and L1 fingers to the sides.
Practice extending your R1 finger to the left to hit the h key. Then try reaching to the right with your L1 finger for the g key. Afterwards, always
remember to return your fingers to the home keys.

2. The Top Row

Congratulations on mastering the home row! You are now ready to learn to type the top row. You will be moving your fingers much more
frequently in these lessons. Remember to always return your fingers to the home keys and keep your fingers curved and pointing directly
down on the keys. This will make it easier to reach the new keys you will learn in the succeeding lessons. Strike the keys with only enough force
required to register a keystroke. As you encounter new keys, slow down as much as necessary to reach them with accuracy.

Practice Typing With Words

Excellent work! You have learned to type all the letters in the alphabet, as well as basic punctuation keys.

4. Capital Letters

Now that you know all the letter keys, let's learn to type them in capitals. To type the capital / uppercase of any letter, hold down any of the
SHIFT keys while typing the letter key. You will notice that, there are two SHIFT keys on your keyboard - one on each side. You should press
the SHIFT key with your 4th (either R4 / L4) finger of the hand opposite the one you are typing the letter with. This way, you can maintain
the correct hand position with your letter typing hand and more easily return to the home row position afterwards.

The Right Hand Capital Letters

We will begin typing capital letters with the right hand while using the LEFT-SHIFT key.

5. Punctuations

If you have completed the first four sets of lessons, pat yourself on the back for coming this far! You are now well on your way to becoming an
excellent typist.

In these lessons we will learn how to type commonly used punctuation marks. You have already learned the period, comma and semicolon, and
we will review those keys as well. In the previous lesson, we learned to type capital letters. The capital letters are the secondary characters for the
lower case keys and holding the shift allows us to type them. Likewise, the symbol keys also have other symbols as secondary characters, and
you will encounter several of these keys in this lesson.

Review

First, let's have a little review of four symbols we've already learned: ; , . /

As you already know, the semi-colon is the home key for the R4 finger. The comma, period, and forward slash are the bottom row keys for the R2
finger, R3 finger and R4 finger, respectively.

;;; ;;; ,,, ,,, ;;; ,,, ... ... /// /// ... /// ;;; ... ,,, /// ,,,
The Colon

Now let's add to our repertoire by learning the colon symbol: :

Cebu Doctors’ University Senior High School Page 4 of 7

Keyboarding Lessons

The colon is the alternate character for the semi-colon key. To type it, just press the key with your R4 finger while holding the LEFT-SHIFT key
with your L4 finger.

::: ::: ::: ::: ;;; ;;; ;;; ;;; ::: ;;; ::: ;;; ::: ;;; :;: :;: :;:
Apostrophe And Double Quotation Marks

Now, let's introduce apostrophe (also used as a single quote mark) and the double quotation mark: ' "

Both characters use the same key. To reach it, extend your R4 finger to the key directly to the right. The double quote is typed while holding the
LEFT-SHIFT key and the apostrophe is typed without it.

''' ''' ''' ''' """ """ """ """ ''' """ ''' """ ''' """ '"' '"' '"'
The Question Mark

Bored with typing declarative sentences? It's time to learn the question mark: ?

The question mark is the secondary character for the /, which you have already learned. To type it, move your R4 finger down to the bottom row
and hold the LEFT-SHIFT key.

??? ??? ??? ??? /// /// /// /// ??? /// ??? /// ??? /// ?/? ?/? ?/?
The Exclamation Point

Now you're cooking with gas! Let's learn how to type the most exciting character: !

You will type the exclamation point character with the L4 finger, reaching above and to the left of the q key, while holding the RIGHT-SHIFT key.

!!! !!! !!! !!! aaa aaa aaa aaa !!! aaa !!! aaa !!! aaa !a! !a! !a!
The Hyphen

But wait - there's more! Let's learn to type the hypen: -

The hyphen is typed with the R4 finger, reaching up and to the right of the p key.

--- --- --- --- ;;; ;;; ;;; ;;; --- ;;; --- ;;; --- ;;; -;- -;- -;-
Punctuation In The Wild

Congratulations! You have learned how to type all the punctuation symbols.

Keyboarding Lessons

1. Encode the following lines on the same document with the first keyboarding exercise but
starting on a new page.
2. Press ENTER after every line.
3. You might experience Auto Capitalization of every first letter of each line, just ignore that.
4. Aim for accuracy and speed that is sufficient enough for practical use.
5. Save your work regularly in your folder, say every two minutes.
