Q.1: A scraper will be hauling soil on a rout with an 8% grade. The empty and loaded
weights of the scraper are 39,000 kg and 75,000 kg respectively ( consider empty and
load vertical weight lines). Rolling resistance of the haul road is estimated at 70 kg/t. The
rimpull and retarder performance charts are shown below.

a) Calculate the total resistance in equivalent % grade of the road of the road during
the haul (cut to fill) and return (fill to cut) trips.
b) What is the maximum speed that can be attained by the scraper during the haul
and return trips? Assume no tire slippage occurs.
c) If the road conditions are slippery wet sand such that the coefficient of traction is
0.15.
• Calculate the maximum usable rimpull that can be attained prior to tire
slippage.
• Determine the maximum speed and haul grade that can be attained
without slippage.
• What is your recommendation if you are going to use the same grade
resistance?
• Assume the scraper has 30% of its gross weight on the drivers.
