Classwork 5
Instructor Dr. Ahmed Taha
Q1. Assuming that the coefficient of traction is sufficient such that a truck’s total power
can be developed, calculate the rimpull of a pneumatic-tired truck with a 140-hp engine.
The truck is operating at a speed of 3.3 mph in first gear. Use the SAE recommended
efficiency.? SAE recommends using 0.85 when the efficiency is not known.

Q.2. Consider a tractor whose weight is 12.4 tons and whose maximum rimpull in the
first gear is 13,523 lb. If it is operated on a haul road with a positive slope of 2% and a
rolling resistance of 100 lb/ton,
a) Calculate the total resistance
b) Calculate the power available for towing a load.
