Course : Methods and Equipment for Construction II
Course No : CB 524
Lecturer : Dr. Mohamed Salem Nashwan.
Exercise No : [5] Earthmoving Operation (Part 2)

9.1 Calculate the rimpull of a pneumatic-tired truck with a 150-hp engine. The tractor is
operating at a speed of 3.5 mph in first gear.
Assuming that the coefficient of traction is sufficient such that the machine’s total power
can be developed.

9.2 A loaded wheeled-scraper the movement resisting forces of it is 140,000 Ibs travelling
on a packed sand haul route where the tires sink about 3 inches into the travel surface,
and the working site has a grade of 2%.
Calculate the rimpull of it, if the engine rated power is 465 hp and its speed is 10 mph on
the 3rd gear. Then calculate the net available power for the scraper.

9.3 A wheeled Type tractor with a 250 hp. It has a gross weight of 40 tons. It operated up
a haul road with a slope of 4 % and Rolling resistance of 90 lb/ton. The tractor has the
following Speed:

What is the maximum speed of the tractor that can be operated by if the engine
efficiency is 0.85?

9.4 Assume that a rubber-tired tractor has a total weight of 20,000 Ib on its driving
wheels. The maximum rimpull in low gear is 10,000 Ib. if the tractor is operating in wet
sand, with a coefficient of traction of 0.3, what is the maximum possible rimpull before
slippage of the tires?

9.5 Calculate Going and return time of a scrapper equipment has an empty weight of
90,000 lb its capacity equals 20 bcy and soil density is 3,000 lb/bcy and rolling resistance
of 140 lb/ton with a haul road of 5000 ft (1500 ft up a slope of 5%, 2000 ft down a slope
of 1% and 1500 ft up a slope of 3 %) assume 300 ft is required for both acceleration and
deceleration at a maximum speed of 7mph.

9.6 A wheeled Type tractor with a 160 Rated hp. It has a gross weight of 15 tons. It
operated up a haul road with a slope of 3 % and Rolling resistance of 90 lb/ton. The
tractor has the following Speed:

Required:
a- Calculate Total Resistance.
b-Calculate Available hp if the tractor on an attitude of 2000 ft above sea level and with
temperature equals to 70 F.
c- Maximum Speed to operate.
d- If the coefficient of traction is 0.6 and 50% of the total weight is on driving wheel can
the tractor operate at these Conditions?
