MINE LOCOMOTIVE

CALCULATIONS
1. A Mine locomotive weighs 15 tef and the adhesion to the tracks is 2246N per tef.
Calculate the coefficient of adhesion and the draw-bar pull which the loco is capable of
exerting on (i) a level track (ii) an adverse gradient of 1 in 100 and (iii) an adverse
gradient of 1 in 5. Assume that the running resistance of the locomotive is 67 N per tef.
2. A locomotive and a train have a total mass of 600 metric tonnes. The resistance
opposing motion can be assumed to be constant and amounts to be 60N/tonne. If the
loco can exert a constant pull of 120kN find how long will it take to accelerate the train
from rest to 84 km/h on a level track.
3. What is the maximum tractive effort that can be developed by a 15 tonne loco of 75
kW assuming a coefficient of friction of 0.25 ? At what speed will it haul a train when
developing its full power and maximum tractive effort assuming the mechanical
efficiency to be 84%.
4. A train of 200t is drawn up a slope of 1 in 200 against resistance of 60N per tonne with
uniform acceleration which in a distance of 2km increases its speed from 36 to 54 km/hr.
Find the power at which the engine is working.
5. Design for the maximum size of mine trains (hauled load) which can be started up a
gradient of 1 in 100 at an acceleration of 0.045 m/s2 by mine locomotive (engine) of 10t if
the coefficient of adhesion is 0.2 and the friction resistance coefficient is 0.01.
