1 INTRODUCTION

Dear Student,

Welcome to the ONLINE module TRL2604. We will do our best to make this module interesting
and rewarding. You will be well on your way to success if you start studying early in the semester
and resolve to do your assignments diligently. Because this is an online module, you need to use
myUnisa to study and complete the learning activities for this course. You need to visit the module
website on myUnisa frequently. All students must be registered for a myLife e-mail address and
must be able to access myUnisa. This will give them access to their study material, and enable
them to submit assignments, gain access to the library functions and various learning resources,
download study material, “chat” to their lecturers and fellow students about their studies and the
challenges they encounter, and participate in online discussion forums.
We hope that your studies will be enjoyable and successful.

1.1 Getting started


All information is available on the myUnisa site. In the online environment you will be guided
through the content by working through the learning units on myUnisa. Because this is an online
module, you need to go online to see your study material and read up on what to do for the
module. Go to the website here: https://my.unisa.ac.za and login with your student number and
password. You will see the module’s name in the row of modules in the orange blocks across the
top of the webpage. Remember to also check in the “more” tab if you cannot find it in the orange
blocks. Click on the module you wish to open. In addition, you will receive this tutorial letter and
a printed copy of the online study material from your module. While these printed materials may
appear to be different from the online study materials, they are exactly the same and have been
copied from the online myUnisa website.
1.2 How to study this module online
This module is taught online, which means the following:
 All your study material and learning activities are online, on myUnisa. Please note
that printed study material and all the tutorial letters are available on myUnisa.
 All your assignments must be submitted online. This means that you can do all your
activities and submit all your assignments on myUnisa in the required format (PDF).
 All of the communication between yourself and the University also happens online
via e-mail, in the Discussion Forums and through the Question and Answer tool. You can
use all of these ways to ask questions. This also means that your lecturer will communicate

with you in the same way – through emails, with Announcements, in the Discussion Forums
and on the Question and Answer tool.

2 PURPOSE OF AND OUTCOMES FOR THE MODULE

This module is at NQF level 6. Please refer to Tutorial Letter 301 for a detailed description of the
NQF levels and an explanation of how you will be evaluated accordingly.
2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to provide you with knowledge and skills of logistics, which will
enable you to make a positive contribution to the integration of internal processes in a firm and
the total supply chain, thus making it possible to meet customer requirements at the lowest total
cost. This module is also foundational in the sense that it provides a solid knowledge base
necessary to articulate third-level studies.
2.2 Outcomes
There are five learning outcomes for this module, and after completing it, you should be able to
do the following:
 Explain the theoretical concepts and mission of logistics.
 Contribute to minimising total logistics costs by integrating internal logistics operations as
a result of your basic understanding of the integration between logistics activities and the
coordination of logistics components.
 Contribute to minimising total logistics cost by integrating logistics and other functions and
processes in a company.
 Contribute to domestic supply chain integration and competitive advantage by making
recommendations about collaboration and supply chain relationships.
 Contribute to international supply chain integration through your understanding of the
logistical implications of global operations and international trade terms.
The module is delivered via myUnisa, the internet, peer group interaction and community
engagement in some of the activities. Your lecturers will interact with students on myUnisa and
via e-mail.

I provide guidance to students on weekdays from 08:30 to 16:00. If you would like visit me
personally, please make an appointment beforehand. DO NOT contact your lecturers about
administrative matters, because they. ONLY deal with academic queries.
If you have any administrative queries, such as queries about registration and financial matters,
please contact the relevant administrative department. The contact addresses of the various
administrative departments are included in the brochure, Study @ Unisa, which you received
with your study package.

3.2 Lecturer availability


The lecturer for this module will be available to take phone calls on academic matters and/or to
attend to students who may prefer to visit personally for academic engagement. However,
personal visits can only be granted to discuss those academic content-related issues that could
not be resolved via e-mail and telephone conversations. The days and times of lecturer’s
availability will be communicated in the module page on myUnisa. These days and times are
subject to change in order to accommodate the lecturer’s work schedule and other commitments.
The changes on the days and times will be communicated by the lecturer in advance through the
announcement option on myUnisa. Students are advised to check the module page on myUnisa
before making phone calls or visiting the lecturer’s office for academic enquiries/engagements.

4.1 Joining myUnisa


If you have access to a computer linked to the internet, you can quickly access resources
and information at the University. The myUnisa learning management system is Unisa's
online campus that will help you to communicate with your lecturers, with other students
and with Unisa’s administrative departments – all through the computer and the internet.
You can start at the main Unisa website, http://www.unisa.ac.za, and then click on the
myUnisa orange block. This will take you to the myUnisa website. To go to the myUnisa
website directly, go to https://my.unisa.ac.za. When you are on the myUnisa website click
on the “Claim UNISA Login” on the right-hand side of the screen. You will then be prompted
to give your student number to claim your initial myUnisa as well as myLife login details.

4.2 The myUnisa tools you will use
All of the information on the myUnisa tools is located on the myUnisa website for this
module. It is important to log into myUnisa regularly to take part in the discussions and to
check for new announcements. In the section below, we would like to highlight certain tools
that you will be using:
 Learning Units: All study material can be found under this tool.
 Assignments: You will find your assignments under Learning Units. The assignments
can also be found at the end of this tutorial letter. In TRL2604, both assignments are in
the form of multiple-choice questions.
 Discussion Forums: There may be several discussions taking place here where you
can share ideas. You may also ask questions, to which other students or the lecturer
can respond. Some of the activities will request discussion, and we encourage you to
become involved, as this will help you learn.
 Check for any new Announcements. You can also set up your myLife e-mail so that
you receive the Announcement e-mails on your cell phone.

5 DISCUSSION CLASS

Please note: It is essential that you either buy or have the prescribed book at your disposal. We
recommend that you purchase the prescribed book as you will have to study it thoroughly and
refer to it frequently. We suggest that you try to obtain the book as soon as possible.
Predatory providers of classes and examination support
Please be aware of the existence of multiple fraudulent and predatory providers of classes and
examination guidance to Unisa students. Please note that Unisa do not have agreements with
any of these agencies/schools/colleges to provide tuition or support to our students. Unisa also
do not provide these predators with study material, guidelines or your contact information. These
providers may not have the necessary expertise to assist you and often charge exorbitant fees. If
you receive an invitation from any agency or College, it is best to confirm with your lecturer if the
provider is a legitimate Unisa partner.

6 STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES FOR THE MODULE

For information on the various student support systems and services available at Unisa (e.g.
student counselling, tutorial classes and language support), please consult my Studies @ Unisa.

6.1 Information about tutorial offerings at Unisa


Bear in mind that Unisa offers online tutorials (e-tutoring) to students registered for modules at
NQF levels 5, 6 and 7, which means qualifying first-, second- and third-year modules. This will
only be applicable to modules for which more than 200 students have registered. Once you have
been registered for a qualifying module, you will be allocated to a group of students with whom
you will be interacting during the tuition period as well as an e-tutor who will be your tutorial
facilitator. Thereafter you will receive an SMS informing you about your group, the name of your
e-tutor and instructions on how to log onto myUnisa in order to receive further information on the
e-tutoring process. Only students registered for e-tutoring modules to which e-tutors have been
allocated will receive the communication. Thus if you have not received any communication about
e-tutoring you will not have an e-tutor for the specific module.

Online tutorials are conducted by qualified e-tutors appointed by Unisa, and they are offered free
of charge. All you need to be able to participate in e-tutoring is a computer with internet
connection. If you live close to a Unisa Regional Centre or a Telecentre contracted with Unisa,
you are welcome to visit any of these in order to access the internet. E-tutoring takes place on
myUnisa where you are expected to connect with other students in your allocated group. It is the
role of the e-tutor to guide you through your study material during this interaction process. For
you to make the most of online tutoring, you need to participate in the online discussions that the
e-tutor will be facilitating.

There are modules in which students have been found to repeatedly fail. These modules have
been allocated face-to-face tutors and tutorials so that the modules can take place at the Unisa
Regional Centres. These tutorials are also offered free of charge, but remember that you have to
register at your nearest Unisa Regional Centre to secure attendance of these classes. Please
contact your nearest Unisa Regional Centre to find out if the module you are registered for has
face-to-face tutors.

6.2 Study groups


Many students have found that they benefit immensely from joining a study group consisting of
students who are all enrolled for the same module(s). If you would like to find out whether there
are other students near you who are also doing this module, please contact the Department of
Student Admission and Registration. Alternatively, ask your fellow students to join your group via
the myUnisa discussion forum.

7 MODULE-SPECIFIC STUDY PLAN

Consult my Studies @ Unisa for information on general time management and planning. In this
module we want to help you to develop the abilities that are characteristic of an academically
disciplined person, that is, someone who can think intelligently and constructively and argue
rationally. To acquire these abilities, you must be systematic about tackling the problems you will
encounter in studying this module. Try to adopt a critical attitude to what you read. Study the
material provided, interpret it, make sure you understand it, discuss it critically and supplement it
with new ideas. Then reduce all this material to essential elements, so that you can reproduce
the contents of every section. Bear in mind that you still have to study the subdivisions of the
study material in detail. Do not take it for granted that the examination questions will all be direct
ones. See to it that your knowledge of all the material prescribed for the syllabus is properly
integrated. In this way you will develop a balanced attitude and sound evaluative ability, which
will be of tremendous value in the examinations as well as in your later life and work.

You may, of course, have difficulty with some parts of the study material at a first reading.
However, a second reading should be sufficient to sort out any problems. If not, write to us or
make an appointment and we will help you. Do not merely read through the lectures passively.
This is simply a waste of valuable time. Set about your studies systematically, making effective
summaries of the main points and subdivisions. Try to reduce each unit to a solid framework
which can be filled in without much trouble. This advice may sound trite, but it is definitely the best
method of mastering a large volume of tutorial matter. If you are familiar with modern
memorisation techniques or have already applied them successfully, use them in this course as
well; but consciously try to develop your understanding and also your memory.You need roughly
between four and eight hours of study time per week for each module. The table below can be
used as a guideline on how to plan your study for TRL2604. If you submit your assignment online,
you can submit it on the closing date, allowing you additional study time.

8 HOW TO STUDY THIS MODULE ONLINE

8.1 What it means to study online


This module is taught online – this means that it is different from some of your other modules
at Unisa.
 This means that all your study materials and learning activities are designed to be
online, on myUnisa. Even though we give you a printed copy to support your studies, the
module is designed for online study.
 This means that all of your assignments must be submitted online. It means that you
do all your activities and submit all your assignments on myUnisa. In other words, you may
NOT post your assignments through the South African Postal Service.
 This means that all of the communication between yourself and the University also
happens online – by e-mail, in Discussions and through Questions and Answers. You can
use all of these ways to ask questions and contact your lecturers. This also means that
your lecturers will communicate with you in the same way – through e-mails, by means of
Announcements, in Discussions and with Questions and Answers.

9 ASSESSMENT

9.1 Assessment plan


The assessment for the module, Integrated Logistics, consists of two compulsory multiple-choice
assignments, one optional self-assessment written assignment and one written examination.
Your final mark will be based on a combination of these assessments.

Compulsory Assignment 01 + Compulsory Assignment 02 = Semester mark


Semester mark + Examination mark = Final mark

The assignment and examination system will now be discussed in more detail.
At Unisa, the term “assignment” is used to indicate a specific task that you need to perform in
order to gain admission to sit for the examination. Each assignment has its own specific purpose
and can take one of a variety of formats, depending on the aim of the particular assignment.
Please note: Although students may work together when preparing assignments, each student
must write and submit his or her own individual assignment. In other words, you must submit your
own ideas in your own words, sometimes interspersing relevant short quotations that are properly
referenced. It is unacceptable for students to submit identical assignments on the basis that they
worked together. That is copying (a form of plagiarism), and none of these assignments will be
marked. Furthermore, you may be penalised or subjected to disciplinary proceedings by the
University.

9.2 General assignments numbers


Each assignment has a due date. The due date is the very last date on which the assignment
must reach Unisa. Make sure you submit your assignments early and take possible delays into
account.

REMEMBER TO MAKE A COPY OF EACH ASSIGNMENT!


You can visit your local Postnet branch or post office to make copies of your assignments. It is
essential to make a copy of each assignment. Should your assignment be lost, you can submit
the copy that you have made, thus ensuring that you obtain a valid semester mark.
Please note that no extension will be granted for the submission of assignments.

9.3 Submission of assignments


Permission for the late submission of assignments will only be granted in extreme cases where a
medical certificate or other relevant documents are presented.
We wish to encourage you to use Unisa’s online facilities for submitting your assignments.
Because of the importance of assignments, we advise you to make copies of all your completed
assignments before you submit them, and retain these copies in case there are any queries.
Note: Make sure that your name, address, student number, module code and the number of the
assignment, appear on the cover and at the top of every page of your answer. For detailed
information on assignments, please refer to my Studies @ Unisa.

 Go to myUnisa.
 Log in with your student number and password.
 Select the module.
 Click on assignments in the menu on the left-hand side of the screen.
 Click on the assignment number you wish to submit.
 Follow the instructions.

 Assignments should be submitted electronically in PDF format on myUnisa (not in
Word, Excel, Zipped or any other format).
 Assignments may NOT be submitted by post, fax or e-mail.

Converting your assignment to PDF format ensures that your layout, spacing and pagination
remain unchanged. his may appear unnecessary, but a professional end product is excellent
training for the technological and administrative responsibilities you will face in the tourism
industry. Another advantage of submitting your assignment electronically in PDF format is that
the assignments have a shorter turnaround time as no manual intervention is needed to prepare
the assignments for the marking procedure.
There are a number of free PDF converters available on the web. Some allow you to convert your
files while online, while others provide software programs that can be downloaded and installed
on your computer. Below are a few examples of free PDF converters that can be used as a starting
point. Unisa does not have any affiliation with these products. This list is provided as an

If you already have a version of the Adobe software available to you, you can easily convert text
files, such as MS Word, or spread sheet files directly to PDF from within these programs. Look
for either the Adobe PDF conversion icon displayed on the menu bar of the program or a PDF

printer, sometimes named “Distiller” or “PDF Maker”, installed as one of your print options. Printing
your text or spread sheet file to a PDF printer will create a PDF formatted electronic document.
Guidelines for answering Assignments 01 and 02
 Answer the multiple-choice assignment in pencil on the mark-reading sheet. Keep the
following instructions in mind when answering the multiple-choice assignment. Fill in your
name and student number on the mark-reading sheet in pencil.
 Then code the unique number on the mark-reading sheet in pencil.
 Note: If this is not done correctly, the computer will reject your sheet and it will be returned
to you unevaluated (unmarked). Consult my Studies @ Unisa for details on answering
multiple-choice assignments on mark-reading sheets.
 As this multiple-choice assignment will be marked by an optical reader, your mark-reading
sheet must reach the Registrar (Academic) on time.
 No extension can therefore be granted for Assignments 01 and 02. Mark-reading sheets
that reach the University after the due date will be returned unevaluated (unmarked). You
will then be obliged to complete an alternative assignment if you still wish to gain admission
to the examination.
 Each question has only one correct answer.
 Use the study guide or prescribed textbook to find the answers to the questions.

Before you attempt any assignment, you should first read through the study guide carefully so that
you have an overall idea of the learning content.
10 OTHER ASSESSMENT METHODS

There are no other assessment methods for this module.


11 EXAMINATION

11.1 Examination submission

Submission of compulsory Assignment 01 will provide you with admission to the examination.

Therefore, please ensure that Assignment 01 reaches the University before or on the due date.
Late submission of the assignment will result in you not being admitted to the examination. For
this reason, it is important that you submit Assignment 01 on time. Although you will be admitted
to the examination through the submission of Assignment 01, your marks for both Assignments
01 and 02 will be used to determine your semester mark.

Your semester mark will contribute towards your final mark.


You have to obtain a minimum of 40% in the examination, regardless of your semester mark.
The average of the semester mark and the examination mark must be at least 50% for you to
pass the module.

EXAMPLE:
If your semester mark is 55% and your examination mark is 60%, your final mark will be
calculated as follows:

11.2 Examination period


This module is offered as a semester module. This means the following:
- If you are registered for the first semester, you will write the examination in May/June 2018.
- If you are registered for the second semester, you will write the examination in
October/November 2018.

11.3 Examination paper


The Integrated Logistics examination paper consists of a two-hour written examination counting
70 marks. The paper consists of section A with multiple-choice questions, and section B with
longer written questions.

Section A comprises multiple-choice questions totaling 20 marks. You must answer ALL the
questions in this section.

Section B consists of three (3) questions of which you must answer any two (2). Each question
will consist of long and short questions. Short questions will include name, define and describe
type questions, while long questions will include discuss and explain type questions. These
questions can be asked from a combination of study units.
Please note that only the first two (2) questions will be marked if you answer all three (3)
questions in this section. However, if you do answer all three (3) questions, please ensure that

you cross out the question that you do not want to be marked. Failure to do so may result in you
losing marks.
11.4 Previous examination papers
Previous examination papers are available to students. You can access these papers on
myUnisa. Your lecturer cannot provide you with old examination papers or memorandums.

multiple-choice question assignments and the self-assessment assignment.
