Essay Descent Into Madness
Descent into Madness
Mark Colvin

This piece is written by Mark Colvin, a professor of Sociology in the Department of

Justice Studies at Kent State University, as the introduction to the book Descent into
Madness by Mike Rolland. On February 2nd 3rd, 1980 one of the maximum security
prisons in New Mexico experienced one of the most violent riots in the history of
American Correctional System. This is often referred to as The New Mexico State
Penitentiary Riot. The riot lasted for 36 hours, and in those 36 hours there were 33
deaths. There was one other inmate who dies a couple of months later due to the injuries
incurred in that riot. It is estimated that about 200 inmates were severely injured or raped
in the riot. It is no surprise ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This gave birth to great confusion on all administrative levels and consequently the
administration began to pass vague judgments. The whole haphazard scenario of the
administrational structure gave birth to a mid level clique of administrators who were
virtually unaccountable to anyone in authority for their actions.

Following the change in prison leadership in the mid 1970s, the prison experienced a
shortage of trained correctional staff. A subsequent investigation by the state attorney
general s office found that prison officials began coercing prisoners to become
informants in a strategy known as the snitch game . The state s report said that retribution
for snitching led to an increased incidence of violence at the prison in the late 1970s. By
the end of 1978, this clique of administrators were left to do whatever they wanted to the
prison which caused great unrest amongst the inmates and eventually forced them
towards mutiny. Another major cause of the riot was the cancellation of educational,
recreational and other rehabilitative programs that had run from 1970 to 1975. In that
five year period, the prison had been described as relatively calm. When the educational
and recreational programs were stopped in 1975, prisoners had to be locked down for
long periods. These conditions created strong feelings of deprivation and discontent in
the inmate population that would later
Squealer s Name In Animal Farm By George Orwell
If I m gonna tell you a real story, I m gonna start with my name (Lamar). A name
means a lot about a person. It shows that a person acts a certain way, the way someone
looks like something, or even how someone fills and shapes their name into how they
want to be shown. George Orwell s Animal Farm shows this with a pig named Squealer.
Squealer s nameis a great representative of his personality traits because the character
spreads propaganda and is very persuasive.

Theoretical Models for Understanding Behavior
Theoretical Models for Understanding Behavior In special education it is vital to have
an understanding of human behavior and how it relates to learning disabilities. It is
imperative to have a grasp of the concepts of the models and how it relates to the
educators of tomorrow. (Wheeler, John J., Richey, David Dean, 2010) Understanding
models of behavior also helps to have a more cohesive and positive classroom. When
looking at an atypical child, the biological model, is an excellent starting point. The
biological model is using medically based information to help ascertain the typicality of a
child in relation to his/her counterparts. Using medical data and testing to find anomalies
aids in diagnosing and starting treatment regimens.... Show more content on

His model focuses on the interactions that occur in the environment and how they
affect the behavior. His theory also indicates that children learn by engaging in
activities that they enjoy while working with other children. For example, if a child
(A) were playing with Lego without the knowledge of how to put it together. Another
child (B) sat down and knew how to put the Lego together; child A would learn from
child B. Uri Bronfenbrenner is another known theorist for the ecological model. He is
widely known for the showing that child development circled around the family, school,
and environment. For the child to be educated it all depends on the environment
surrounding the child. There are many factors in his theory; for example, a child is
living in a non supporting home that causes a trickling affect for the child to be
unsuccessful. Bronfenbrenner emphasizes all of the elements must be working toward
the same goal, the student. Nicholas Hobbs was best known for re education of troubled
children and youth. This theory leads to the design of Re Education of Emotionally
Disturbed Children program (RE ED). This included studying Western European
countries examining support for children with a disability. One model studied in France
showed the role of a care giver in child care setting, titled psychoeducateurs. This was not
done in the United States at this time. The psychoeducateur was essentially a child care
specialist who had been

Kevin Rudd apologising for the Stolen Generations in 2009 was a huge turning point and
an opportunity to change how the Australian National Identity is portrayed in the media.

T
he influence of multiculturalism on the Australian national identity is frequently being
questioned in the media. Audiences are left questioning whether we as a nation truly do
embrace every culture who steps through our doors. Multiculturalism is a vital aspect
of the Australian identity and plays a significant role within our day to day life, and is
the entire basis on which our nation was developed: after all we are a land of immigrants.

The Gold Rush also attracted over 1.3 million people from various countries around the
world such as China, Great Britain, Europe and North America. This caused the economy
to boom, with the population increase only happening within a short period of time.
However this caused a lot of racism with each states having different laws and legislation
for the Chinese alone. Most people were very racist towards them as they didn t speak
English, they looked funny and they were concerned that Chinese were better at mining.
This stigma surrounding the Chinese lasted almost a century.
Funnily enough, all cities have at least one Chinese restaurant or café and it definitely
plays a significant part in multiculturalism in Australia.

Social Issues Related to Smoking and Alcohol Consumption...
Alcohol consumption is linked to many harmful consequences for the individual drinker,
the drinker s immediate environment and society as a whole. There are many social
consequences such as traffic accidents, workplace related problems, family and domestic
problems, and interpersonal violence.

Work
People with alcohol dependence and drinking problems are on sick leave more
frequently than other employees. In Great Britain, up to 25% of workplace accidents
and around 60% of fatal accidents at work may be linked to alcohol. drinking alcohol at
work and hangovers may reduce productivity. Performance at work may be affected both

Also arguments over someone s drinking can cause family and relationship problems
that may lead to break up. To address this families may consider going to councilling to
stop the alcohol abuse and also work out any issues that have been the outcome of the
constant alcohol abuse from a family member.

Link between alcohol and poverty?

Apart from money spent on drinks, heavy drinkers may suffer other economic
problems such as lower wages (because of missed work and decreased efficiency on
the job) and lost employment opportunities, increased medical and legal expenses, and
decreased eligibility for loans. To address this issue the government should invest in
centers to inform people of the horrible outcomes of alcohol abuse and also help the
people who have been affected to get back on their feet.

Alcohol abuse could be costing the UK up to £6 billion a year in NHS bills, premature
death, losses to business and drink related crimes and accidents, it was claimed today.
A study by the Royal College of Physicians said drink related health problems could
account for up to 12% of total NHS spending on hospitals, about £3 billion.
But campaigners said that with the estimated £3 billion lost through absenteeism,
unemployment, premature deaths and alcohol related crimes and accidents the total cost
of excessive drinking is £6 billion.
