LEARNING VOCABULARY
Here are some tips to help you learn vocabulary.

What you need

Make sure you have everything that you need to help you learn English vocabulary.

1 a vocabulary notebook and pens of two or three different colours

2 a good learner’s dictionary – this may also be available online
3 a good bilingual dictionary – ask your teacher for advice
4 small cards and post-it notes (these are not essential but many learners find them useful)

1 Writing down a new word

When you write a new word in your vocabulary notebook include:

• what it means
• the word in a context – a phrase or a sentence that shows how it is used
e.g. keen on jazz, to book a double room
• any grammatical information about the word
un
e.g. the different forms of an irregular verb – go, went, gone n, beg
ga
• any information about how the word is pronounced
gin, be eaten
e.g underline the stress – important, photographer be , ate, , gone
and note any silent letters – comb (rhymes with home) eat went d, had ade
go, e, ha ade, m
or through (sounds the same as threw) hav ke, m
• drawings – these can sometimes help you remember ma
what some words mean
• different colours – using different colours to write, for example,
particularly useful words or to underline them
helps some students learn those words

2 Using a learner’s dictionary

A good learner’s dictionary gives you all the information you need about English words and how
they are used. It will explain the meaning in simple and clear English. It will have examples of
how the word is used in a natural context.
If you have the dictionary on CD-Rom you can even hear how the word is pronounced.

One of the things that you will soon notice from an English learner’s dictionary is the fact that one
word in English often has several different meanings.

e.g. a bat can be this or this

A fan can be this or this

So when you use the dictionary, choose the right meaning for the word you are interested in.
Try to use the learner’s dictionary first – it will help you to develop your reading skills as well as
your vocabulary. Only go to a bilingual dictionary if you feel that you are not totally sure what
the word you are interested in means.

3 Using a bilingual dictionary
Bilingual dictionaries are best for the
kinds of words that have one clear
translation – the names of particular
types of birds or flowers, for example.

A lot of these uses of mean need to from most pe
be translated with completely different
words. In addition there are also some
other less common meanings of
mean. Make sure that your bilingual
dictionary deals with at least all of the meanings above.

4 Using cards and post-its

Write words that you want to learn on small cards with the word on one side and
the meaning on the other. Carry them in your pocket and test yourself when you
have a spare moment – on the bus, perhaps.

Write words for household objects on post-its and stick them on those objects in
your house.

Help yourself to learn words

Here are some tips to help yourself learn more English vocabulary.

• Revise regularly. You can’t • Personalise words.
