9. Description of Assessment Tasks

 Revision Tests

Revision tests aim at checking students’ progress, evaluating the content taught and materials
learnt and allowing the reflective practice of both the instructor and the students. Reading
passages are also included, for they allow the students to apply their reading skills. At the same
time, the students are supposed to have reading practice in class and at home before the tests.

9
 Listening Tests

Listening tests are intended to provide the opportunity for the students to demonstrate their
understanding and to improve their listening skills.

 Presentation

At the end of each unit, there will be group presentation. The topic for each group presentation is
closely related to the theme in each unit. Students will be given one week to prepare slides and a
list of 50 words for their group presentation. Each group presentation usually takes 45 minutes,
excluding Q&A. Although all the students work in group, each of them will be individually
assessed. The given score will be based on their fluency, accuracy, content, pronunciation,
vocabulary they use and how well they present.

 Speaking Test

Speaking test is usually held after students have finished their group presentation, and they will
have one week to prepare for the given topic or question. Each of the students will be given 5
minutes to speak inside classroom setting. The given score will be based on their fluency,
accuracy, content, pronunciation, vocabulary they use and how well they speak.

 Quizzes/Homework

Quizzes will be given to students once or twice per unit. Students should be ready for each of the
quizzes provided. Lecturers may inform or surprise the students. It is totally dependent on the
principle chosen between lecturers and students. For homework, students are encouraged to
complete all assigned homework themselves, and on no account are students allowed to cheat.

 Class Participation
Students are encouraged to engage in all class activities heavily. Punctuality, preparation for
class, and prior reading of the assigned chapters or materials are deemed vital for class
participation. More importantly, daydreaming in class, sending SMS, playing games and
especially checking Facebook are strictly prohibited. Students are greatly encouraged to ask any
questions relevant to what they are learning. Class participation is assessed through each
student’s engagement in continuous class activities.
 EPT

10
Students are expected to sit for an English Proficiency Test administered by the Department of
English near the end of semester two.

 Semester exam
Preparation is the key to semester exam success. Thus, students are highly recommended to
prepare well from the beginning of the semester, rather than waiting until the last minute. “One-
night policy” is not recommended for the semester exam or other types of assessment above.
