It all happened last night. We were having dinner in a very nice Italian restaurant
whenJake suddenly became all quiet and said he had something to tell me. He
looked soserious that I was afraid he was going to break up with me or tell me he
had a terribleillness, but then he took a little black box out of his pocket and put
it in front of me. Iopened it and inside was an engagement ring and he just said,
'Will you marry me?' I wasso excited that I didn't even stop to think about it and
replied, 'Yes, of course I will, silly!'And I put the ring on my finger. So there we
were,engaged!

Then we spent the rest of the evening making plans. Can we have the wedding at
yourhouse? You've got such a big, beautiful garden that it'll be perfect. We are
going to waituntil after my final exams in June and I thought a good day would
be 10th July. That givesus eight months to plan everything. It should be enough
time, especially as we don't wanta big traditional white wedding, just a big party
with our best friends and family. We'renot going to start a family straight away
because I need to get my career going, and Imight even decide to stay on at
university and do a master's, but before we do that,we'regoing to travel round the

Anyway,I have to get to class now. I'll phone you tomorrow.

American Black Ducks

By Sam Prentice,wildlife biologist

I work at a US university where my team and I are trying to learn more

aboutwater birds, particularly one called the American black duck. And we've
juststared using an exciting piece of equipment called a 'night-vision scope',
whichallow us to see the ducks in the dark!

We're worried about black ducks mainly because their numbers have
fallenhugely and we don't know whether there's enough food on the east coast
forthese animals. There's a lot of information about their daytime activities,
butnothing about what they do at night, because we simply haven't had
theequipment. But this new 'scope' will produce really clear pictures, even
onmoonless night, so we'll be able to find out more and make better
decisionsabout looking after the area where they live based on what we learn.

It is very hard work. There are four of us, each works six hours daily.
We'vestudied ducks in different locations, and I've had to take a boat to some
sites andmake notes on every duck I see. The weather hasn't helped-some nights
aremild, but more often it's wet. Oh, and it's so quite I've needed lots of coffee
tostop me falling asleepl! We've only missed on working day so far, because
thesnow was too deep even for our special snow vehicles.

Still I like the challenge of it, especially compared to what the summer
willbring- hours in a laboratory, where we've look at our results together. It'll
behard to be stuck inside - but its essential to do this. And I wouldn't change it
foranything!

B.He's looking forward to studying his result.

C.He feels pleased that he'll avoid the hot weather.

30.What might Sam say about his experiences of working outdoors?

A.Sometimes the moon hasn't been very bright. But out equipment provides
theamount of light we need to collect information.

B. We decided that we'd only go to sites that we easy to get to,and I'm reallyglad
we made that decision.

C.Having the right vehicle for bad weather has meant we ve still carried
onworking,whatever its been like outside.

D.The other people in my team are briliant, but its been hard watching ducks
inthe same places every day.s

EARTH DAY

We celebrated Earth Day in my city last week. The idea of this special daybegan
in 1960s when life was very different. Few people talked,or eventhought;about
the environment Most people had no idea how dirty our air andwater were. This
attitude bothered Gaylord Nelson, who was a senator in the USgovemment, and
he had an idea.If people around the world knew the planetwas in danger, they
might work harder to save it, so he just needed to get theirattention. The first
Earth Day was just in the United States but it led to eventsevery year all around
the world on April 22 or the nearest weekend, dependingon where you are.

In my town, last Saturday afternoon lots of people rode their bikes from
thepark, around the town together and back to the park, taking as much time
asthey possible could, so that the cars had to wait. Then we talked to all
thedrivers in cars which just had one person in them,to explain how wasteful
thatis and how much pollution it causes. The idea was to make people think
abouthow much they use their cars.In other places, people collected plastic bags
for aweek and thenenade a pile of them in the town square. You can do anything
aslong as it makes people of all ages come together for a few hours and talk
about the environment,Last year we had a big music event for young people.
Somepeople said it was a waste of time, but there was information for people to
readand announcements between the bands about how to help protect
theenvironment.

C. one man wanted people to know about the planet's problems.

D.people had started to worry about damage to the environment.

28.What happened on Earth Day this year in the writer's city?

A.People cycled slowly through the streets.

B. There was a talk about the pollution made by cars.

C.Cars were not allowed in the city centre

D.Cars had to have more than one person in them.

29. What does the writer think is the most important thing about Earth
Dayevents?

A.that people should become involved in them

B.that there should be some music

C.that they should attract young people

D.that they should last all day

Day?
