CARBOXYLIC ACIDS

MATERIALS: SAMPLES: CHEMICALS/ REAGENTS:

• Ferric chloride

PROCEDURES:

A. TEST FOR SOLUBILITY

1. Label three test tubes as TEST TUBE#1 (Acetic acid), TEST TUBE#2 (Oleic acid) and TEST TUBE#3
(Benzoic acid) and then add 5 gtts of distilled water
 Shake to mix.
 Observe the solubility in water
 Write your observation

SAMPLE OBSERVATIONS
Acetic Acid - Acetic acid mixed with water, meaning it is
soluble in water. The cloudy appearance
became a clear solution.

FATTY ACID FORMATION

1.In TEST TUBE #1, add 5mL of cooking oil and in TEST TUBE #2, add 5 mL of butter.
 Place in water bath for 5 minutes
 Pour the contents into an evaporating dish
 Add 5 gtts of 3M HCl
 Note the appearance, color and odor

SAMPLE OBSERVATIONS
Acetic Acid Appearance – the mixture appeared as a layered
solution because the acetic acid and cooking oil did
not mix.
Color – the color of the oil became slightly yellow,
and the acetic acid remain whitish
Odor – vinegar-like smell

B. REACTION WITH SODIUM BICARBONATE

 1. In TEST TUBE #1-3, add 5 gtts of and in TEST TUBE #2, add 5 mL of butter.
 Place in water bath for 5 minutes
 Pour the contents into an evaporating dish
 Add 5 gtts of 3M HCl
 Note the appearance, color and odor

Color- still unchanged (clear)

C. TEST FOR REDUCING PROPERTY

1. In TEST TUBE #1, add 5mL of cooking oil and in TEST TUBE #2, add 5 mL of butter.
 Place in water bath for 5 minutes
 Pour the contents into an evaporating dish
 Add 5 gtts of 3M HCl
 Note the appearance, color and odor
