insight

into
sound
Sound creates context, it engages, expands, reveals something new
about an experience and through repeating sound in stories or by
telling stories we improve the life of those around us and the next
generation to come.
Thinking about the TRC case, the Truth and Reconciliation Com-
mission did amazing work and by creating a panel of people, they
gave those who never got the chance to speak up, those whose voices
were silenced by the apartheid government a chance to tell what had
happened to them. The people were given the chance to ask for jus-
tice and even though they did not always get the answers they wanted
they had the chance tell those who were watching what was taken
away from them and that is powerful.
Basil has a very interesting way of telling stories and he men-
tioned that the world of story intrigues him. He chooses moments of
people’s lives and turns it into a theatrical masterpiece so that others
can become part of the stories.
He places specific emphasis on the moments that make up a person
and how that can contribute to how the story of that person is told.
Relating this to Ahmed Timol, something that I have thought about
from the beginning is his life as a teacher and the impact he might
have had on the children he was working with as an anti-apartheid
activist. He was a teacher, a son, an uncle, and an inspiring political
leader.
The last part of the workshop was very moving. We worked in our
case-study groups and decided to use poetic devices along with layer
sound to tell a simple 4-line story.
The result was amazing and very moving to see the reaction it had
on those who watched. I was personally touched and disturbed (at
the same time) by the realness of the stories that was created by our
class.

BASIC
TYPO- Before engaging with this course I had never been exposed to
the TRC (Truth and Reconciliation Commission). The TRC is an

GRAPHIC
emotionally loaded topic and with no prior exposure to it it could be
expected that I would be emotionally overwhelmed with the intensity
of the content it contains but instead, due to the manner in which

LAYOUTS
it was introduced and explored in the AVReQ space, I felt almost no
emotional connection to the content. I detached from the content
and became emotionally distant towards it.
REFLECTION
A reflection on my expe-
rience with the AVReQ
program.

The manner in which the topic was introduced

(through PowerPoint slides read over in a bland
tone) created a dull experience and caused dis-
tance between myself and the topic to develop.
The AVReQ workshops, particularly the initial one
felt unnecessary and because of the tedious and
drab manner in which the content was pains-
takingly slowly explored, the workshops served
contrary to their desired purpose of captivating
students and informing them of the emotional
significance of the TRC.

I acknowledge that Stellenbosch University is a

South African institution and therefore has been
shaped by the South African context, however, I
often believe that South African historical con-
tent is forcefully included in the course in areas
where it seems inappropriate to do so. I would
prefer to investigate the technicality of design
and use a more personal individual context to do
so.

I recognise that part of the reasoning for

grounding the context of the recent projects in
the TRC and broader South African history has
been due to the specific type of design which
we have been engaging with, primarily emotive
design. We have been attempting to convey emo-
tion and construct a narrative through our de-
sign and having a context provided to base our
designs on facilitates an equal opportunity for all
students, it also removes the need for excessive
focus on generating a context thereby freeing
time to focus on the actual designs themselves.

This was not my initial perspective and I remain On closer inspection and through the process of
convinced that the manner in which the project repeatedly engaging with the case and the TRC
was introduced at AVReQ played a role in my as a whole throughout the completion of the
attitude towards the topic. Due to my initial emo- various projects which were linked to it, I began
tional dissociation towards the topic, and a trust to understand the emotional significance of the

distance from this content is a predetermined
bias on my part assuming all South African

to explore other perspectives and search for
