7 ROCK BOLTING METHODOLOGY:

The rock bolting works will be performed according to the following description. The method
may be adjusted during the course of the work if required to accommodate local conditions
encountered on site.

7.1 Methodology

The following details the scope for this WMS Methodology:

7.1.1 Types of rock bolts:

i. PG Bolt:
Post Grouted or injection bolts are made of deformed steel bars with a hose attached.
Grouting is done after installation of the bolt through the hose. Bolts shall have a minimum
diameter of 28mm for steel grade ST 42 and 25mm for steel grade ST 52. Couplers may be
used

ii. SN Rock Bolt:

SN Bolts are made of deformed steel bars and fully bonded with the surrounding rock by
cement grout / mortar. The hole is filled with grout/ mortar before insertion of the bolt. Bolts
shall have a minimum diameter of 28mm for steel grade ST 42 and 25mm for steel grade
ST 52. Couplers may be used

iii. Self-Drilling Rock Bolt (IBO):

Self-drilling bolts are a combined system of rock bolts and drill rod. During drilling, the bolts
are used as a drill rod fixed with a drill bit. Rod and bit remain in the hole as a rock bolt,
which is grouted through the centre holes. In case of collapsing bore holes, this system
enables the installation of rock bolts Couplers may be used

iv. Swellex Rock Bolt:

v. These are mechanically folded metal tubes. High water pressure inflates the tube and the
tube swells to adopt its shape to fit into the bore hole and produce anchorage by means of
friction.

vi. Rock Bolt Plate:

SN and PG Rock Bolt Plates will be 150x150x8mm

7.1.2 Installation
i. Rock Bolts:
- Rock Bolting shall be carried out as shown on the design drawings.
- Jumbo shall drill the boreholes for all rock bolts to the depths as per requirement/ design.
- Borehole shall be flushed / cleaned of drill cuttings and debris by flushing with high
pressure compressed air and water, jumbo will continuing to drill additional rock bolts /
rock anchors.

ii. PG Bolts:
- The hole is drilled as per the lengths as shown in the drawings.

Sep 2011 Page 9 of 22 I1007-LIN-OPR-WMS-TL-003 (5)

Chenani-Nashri Tunnel Project Rock Bolting
WMS No.: I1007-LIN-OPR-WMS-TL-0003 (6)

- The bar is inserted into the hole with the grout hoses. The collar is blocked and the hole
is grouted.
- Post tensioning shall be done 8 to 12 hours after the grouting by tightening the nut of the
grouted rock bolt after installation of anchor plate. This force shall be applied by a
calibrated torque wrench.
- After the installation of the bolts a force of approximately 20KN shall be applied at the
anchor plate to tighten the nut and bolt

iii. SN Bolts:
- The hole is drilled as per the lengths as shown in the drawings.
- The grout hose shall be placed at the full depth of the drill hole and thereafter gravity in
association with internal pressure will therefore allow the grout tube/grout hose to
withdraw as the grout is pumped inside. The bolt is then driven / pushed into the hole
and shall be allowed to set for at least 8 to12 hrs.
- Post tensioning shall be done 8 to 12 hours after the grouting by tightening the nut of the
grouted rock bolt after installation of anchor plate.

iv. Installation of Self Drilling Bolts (IBO):

- Self drilling rock bolts shall be used in deteriorated ground/i.e. higher support
classification and geological conditions where the effective installation of other types of
rock bolts is difficult. The self drilling anchor shall be placed by drilling the rod into the
ground without withdrawing the rod
- Self-drilling rock bolts shall be grouted through the centre flushing holes immediately
after completion of installation operation. The opening of the hole around the bolt shall
be filled with cement by introducing one small opening as an air bye pass.
- In the event of a confined space/area where great length of rock bolts, coupling shall be
used to join the pieces of bolt to achieve the required length. The number of coupled
parts shall be kept to a minimum. Special care shall be paid to the grouting procedure in
order to ensure full embedment of the bolt by grout.
- For longer or greater depth of self drilling bolt, an extension may be added with the
provision of a coupling to suit.

v. Installation of Swellex Type Bolts:

- Boreholes for the rock bolts shall be drilled to the depths as required. The boreholes
shall be cleaned of all drill cuttings, sludge and debris.
- The installation of rock bolts shall be done not later than two hours after drilling of the
boreholes.
- The installation system for Swellex rock bolts consists of a high pressure water pump
coupled with an inflation chuck that is pushed over the bolt’s head bushing to conduct
the water flow from the pump to the inside of the bolt.
- The water pumps used for this operation are high pressure pumps that can rapidly and
safely deliver the 300 bars constant pressure specified for a perfect installation. The
inflation chuck is a safe and simple system that grips and injects the water inside the of
the Swellex bolt.

Chenani-Nashri Tunnel Project Rock Bolting
WMS No.: I1007-LIN-OPR-WMS-TL-0003 (6)

- Once the inflation is completed, the pressure is released manually, or automatically, like
with the electric and hydraulic versions of the pump.
- Swellex Pump PSP 240/300 shall be used. The rock bolt shall be drained after inflation.
