LESSON 01

INTRODUCTION

Michele Palermo “ADVANCED STRUCTURAL DESIGN”

Advanced Structural Design -Michele Palermo-

REQUIREMENTS & PRIOR KNOWLEDGE

• Basic concepts of structural mechanics (theory of elasticity,

constitutive models,…) and structural analysis (beams, truss).
These concepts are typically provided in the course of Advanced
Structural Mechanics

• Fluent spoken and written English is a necessary pre-requisite: all

lectures, presentations and all study material will be in English.

– Advanced Structural Design -9 CFU- (Prof. Palermo)

– Design Projects A -3CFU- (Prof. Foglieri) => no grade

ASSESSMENT METHOD / VERIFICATION

Advanced Structural Design (9CFU)

• Homeworks and exercises are assigned typically every

weeks and then checked by the Tutor of the course (Dr.
Vittoria Laghi) during dedicated laboratory lectures
(typically on Friday)

• Assessment will be given according to a final written test

and an oral exam.
-Written test (compulsory): practical skills of the
student in solving exercises related to design and
verification of members and simple structures
-Oral exam (elective): questions covering all
theoretical aspects of the course 4

Codes
Advanced Structural Design -Michele Palermo-

Codes

“A structural design code can be viewed as a predictive

tool, in the sense that the designer, having followed the
requirements of the code, would expect the resulting
structure to be sufficiently safe and serviceable
during the period of its expected life.” (R. Melchers
1999)

• Structural safety requirements

• Serviceability requirements
• Robustness w.r.t. accidental loads
• Costs are also important
Advanced Structural Design -Michele Palermo-

Codes

Principles
These are general / mandatory

Application Rules
These can be changed during time
Advanced Structural Design -Michele Palermo-
Framework of codes for structural steel design

EC 0: basis of design IBC-2009

EC 1: actions It is a code.
EC 3: steel IBC is available for adoption by ordinance
Eurocodes are and use by jurisdictions internationally
specifications/guidelines/manuals. (e.g. it is used in USA and Japan).
These need to be adopted by means of a
National Annex in order to be
AISC 360: steel
effectively enforced in a country.
ASCE 7: loads
These are standards, which are recalled
many times by IBC.
D.M. 17/01/2018
In Italy, this is “the law”.
It is mandatory.
