Research proposal: Harassing phone calls from enormous callers.

Date: 19/10/2011 To: Shafqat Chaudhuri, Lecturer From: Mushfequr Rahman, Eng-105, Sec-4 Subject: The extent to which young women receive harassing phone calls from enormous callers and the effect of these calls.

Introduction:
This topic is about the unnecessary phone calls that some people purposely make to disturb or harass others. This type of practice is visibly increasing in our society at the present. In this research paper I will focus on the significance and magnitude of the problems caused by unwanted phone calls. My study relates the impact of such calls on individuals as well as on the society. In my study I will try to find out what individuals think about the reasons of the problem and also the impact of the problem on them and on the society. The topic itself represents the significance of the issue. At present in the young generation this type of practice is very common in our society. Increased use of mobile phones and also increased availability of mobile phones (as well as other means like land phones) have made it a culture in the young generation to call and search for a person of opposite sex to have a chat over the phone. For such acts young girls and boys face irritating situation while receiving these calls. As it has become a culture in the young generation, it is also affecting our social values in a negative way. This research paper is based on the affects of such phone calls on individuals and on the society. Pointing out the troubles caused by such unwanted phone calls, the aim of my study is to raise public

awareness about the significance of the problem so that people put attention to stop performing such an annoying practice.

Research questions:
In my research I am going to find out what are the reasons that how people get harassed by the unwanted phone calls from the unknown people. For that I will be addressing the following research questions. How often do you get irritating phone calls? Which type of phone is mostly used by the people? What do the people who make the calls want from you? What do they do if you say you are not interested to talk with them? What kind of people do you think mostly make the unwanted phone calls? How do you react while you talk to them? What is your feeling after receiving such calls? What are the reasons you do not like irritating phone calls? What do you know regarding the existence of any law against the people who make those calls? Some people actually like receiving such calls and like to flirt over the phone. What is your opinion about the impact of such act on the society? What are the possible ways to reduce such problem? Was there ever any situation where you liked talking with a person who called you? If yes to the previous question, then why did you like talking to them?

Hypothesis:
I will do my research based on the assumption that most of women do not like answering unwanted phone calls. I also think that the victims face severe mental disturbance during and after answering to such calls. My assumption extends as I think that the victims also hold negative intention to answer such calls. I also assume decrease personal values of the persons involved but also affect our social values in a negative way. That the act of making such calls has negative impact on our society. As some people

happily answer these calls and also flirt with the person from the other side, I think such acts not only encourage those callers but also change our social values.

Research methodology:
To do my study on the topic much research needed to be conducted. My focus is to look at the grounds for the problem and to find out the significance of to the problem as well as to get different views of people about what they think regarding this problem. Finding out the possible ways of reducing the problem is another main focus of my study. To reach to all my target findings I divide the research methodology based on two types of information. These are 1) primary information and 2) secondary information. For my primary research, I will conduct a survey of women most of whom are students studying in universities, married women, single women who all live in Dhaka. For that I will design a questionnaire with different types of questions that will provide a range of useful data which will help me answer my research questions. For my secondary research I am planning to use library and web resources. For finding material on the web, I will use the standard search engines such as Google as well as large reference sites and news sites.

Organization:

I will divide my research paper in several sections, and the most important sections are the Introduction, Background, Data Presentation and Analysis, and Summary of Findings. I may change my organization listed above according to my need and it will be based on my research questions .

Timetable:
I plan on completing my primary research by the end of October, and my secondary research by mid November. I shall complete processing the final draft of my Research Paper by the end of the spring semester before the deadline.

Request for approval:

I thereby request your approval for my research proposal. If you wish me to modify or improve my proposal, I will resubmit it after making the necessary changes. I would also feel helpful if you bestow me your kind advice and help me in conducting my research and completing my project.
