Formal Lab Report Series: The Purpose, Hypothesis and Prediction

When writing a formal lab report for senior science classes a Purpose section must be included.
For investigations that involve a controlled experiment, a Hypothesis and a Prediction would
also be required. This activity will be used as a guide to help you to write a purpose, hypothesis
and prediction for any future labs.

5.11 Prelab: Properties of Ionic and Molecular Compounds p. 213

1. Using the textbook, find six (6) physical properties of ionic compounds.(KU /3 marks)

2. Using the internet, find the melting point (in degrees Celsius) of: (Com / 4 marks)

lauric acid (C12H2402) __________

sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) __________

glucose (C6H1206) __________

potassium chloride (KCl) _________

3. a. What two types of elements are found in ionic compounds? (KU /2 marks)

b. What type of element is found in molecular compounds?

4. From page 213: Read the Title of the lab, the Introduction that follows, and the
Testable Question. From these 3 things, write the purpose of the lab: (a Purpose, is a
section of a lab report that explains why the lab is being performed)
(Com /2 marks)
