Episode Notes

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan acquaints us with the

signs of a hypocrite and how one should be
wary of them.

Allah (SWT) tells us in the Quran, “The

hypocrites, they are in the lowest pit of
HellSre.”The lower the hellSre gets, the tougher
it gets. The lowest pit possible in HellSre is
reserved for al-MunaaSqoon—the hypocrites.
Allah tells His Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬twice in the
Quran: It is all the same for them whether you
ask forgiveness for them or do not ask
forgiveness for them; never will Allah forgive
them. (Quran; Surah al-MunaaSqoon, ayah 6)

These people have reached a point of no

return in their hypocrisy. It would be the same
for them whether you made istighfar for them
or you didn’t make istighfar for them. It means
that Allah is telling His Messenger ‫ ﷺ‬that if
you ask Allah to forgive them or you never
asked, it wouldn’t make a difference. Allah
wouldn’t forgive the hypocrites.

It is also mentioned in the Quran Allah says, “If

you should ask forgiveness for them seventy
times – never will Allah forgive them.” (Quran;
Surah at-Tawbah, ayah 80)

Among the numerous signs of a hypocrite are:

Whenever he speaks, he lies.

When he is argued/ debated/ disagreed with,
he explodes.
Whenever he is entrusted with something, he
violates that trust.
He makes a promise; he goes back on his
promise.
They don’t spend except that they regret it.
They don’t even come to the prayer except that
they are lazy.

listening

00:02:12--> 00:02:16

for a long time, the multi below me never been I mean,

00:02:19--> 00:02:22

when there's a serious disease outbreak,

00:02:23--> 00:03:03

warnings are given out. And people are given any means

possible. And they're reminded over and over again that

you need to be careful, this is a dangerous disease. If

you have the following symptoms, go see a physician.

And there are alerts everywhere. I remember recently

because I used to travel a lot. You know, when when like

the bird ju and swine ju, and all this stuff was going

around at airports, they'd have like free hand sanitizers

and extra alerts. And if you're sneezing don't travel and

this and that, and the other, depending on how serious

are diseases, the more panicked societies it gets, and

rightfully so. And if the disease's threatening life

threatening, then it's

00:03:03--> 00:03:40

even more serious, sometimes schools are shut down,

and people don't go to work. And even if they don't have

those symptoms, if they don't actually have that disease,

but they have even the most minor instances of that

symptom, people start thinking maybe they have it. And

they start citing with caution, they get extra careful

because I don't want to take any chances. You know,

maybe this is just a cold, or maybe this is that crazy,

deadly disease that they're talking about all over the

place. And obviously, this is a natural response in any

society. But the disease that I wanted to I wanted to

introduce this quote by this way, because I want to talk to

you about a disease. And this

00:03:40--> 00:04:17

is a disease that a believer should be reminded of all the

time, and it's a serious disease. And you know, as in

medical terminology, like they say, some of the most

serious conditions you can have is a heart condition.

Well, the disease I want to talk to you about is actually a

heart disease. And the chronic term for it is default. We

commonly may have heard the term hypocrisy, hypocrisy,

it's a disease and it's a very serious disease and for any

disease, you have a mythology you have, well, Srst of all

you have what are the you know, what are the

consequences? How bad is it? So what if somebody has

hypocrisy what how bad could it be? What are the

consequences of this disease? Well,

00:04:17--> 00:04:26

Srst let's take a quick look at the consequences. Allah

azza wa jal tells us in the Quran, in the Luna subpoena if

it doesn't kill us phenomena now,

00:04:27--> 00:04:40

the hypocrites there in the lowest pit in the hellSre. The

lower the HellSre gets, the tougher it gets and they are in

an Aspen dark in Aspen. The lowest pit possible in

HellSre is reserved for

00:04:41--> 00:04:42

the hypocrites.

00:04:43--> 00:05:00

Then on top of that, how serious diseases and how if

somebody reaches the terminal stages, you know what,

there's the early stages of a disease, you can go get

treatment, but if it gets to a point of no return, if the

disease reaches a point of no return, then you can't be

held no matter how good the treatment no matter how

00:05:00--> 00:05:33

Expensive the hospital and the doctor are how advanced

the equipment this person can't be helped. A good friend

of mine is a physician and some time and he actually

works in the ER and stuff, you know. So he sees a lot of

like people close to death and he's seen a lot of death.

So one day one time they had this young man who got

into a car accident, he belonged to a very wealthy family,

non Muslims and they came you know, they came by

private jet from all over the country, and they're trying to

tell them we don't care how much money he takes, you

need to save his life. And he got to a certain point where

basically he was practically dead and he said, there's no

no no amount of

00:05:33--> 00:06:08

money can save them now. There's that's beyond us.

Now, this is beyond the attempt of human beings. Now I

want to bring that parallel back to hypocrisy. What is the

cure? What is the remedy? You know, one of the great

gifts in this Deen is that the messenger sallallahu Sallam

would make the offer a person You know how

sometimes you go to the Imam and you ask them Could

you please make the offer me? Or you go ask the elder

could you make the offer me when somebody is traveling

you say could you make the offer me because they do

have the travelers accepted. When somebody is going to

hug you make sure you call them and see make sure you

make go out for me. And they will even come and ask

00:06:08--> 00:06:28

you any specials or you want me to make for you

because I'm going there. Now imagine if the messenger

will last a lot more than himself is making golf for

someone, I will think that will count for a lot. But it must

house His messengers a lot more so twice in the Quran.

So what are they him? Allah whom Amanda stuff in the

home linear,

00:06:30--> 00:07:01

it would be the same for these people, these people have

reached a point of no return in their hypocrisy, it would be

the same for them, whether you made stefarr for them,

or you didn't make a step out for them, meaning if you

asked a lot of forgive them, or was telling his messenger

Salalah Hassan, if you asked a lot of forgiveness, or you

never asked, it wouldn't make a difference a loan

forgiven, alone would not forgive these people. How

serious is this disease, that even the messengers their

house doesn't make a difference. And in another place in

the

00:07:02--> 00:07:10

interest of in the home, Sabrina Martin, when you have a

home, if you asked a lot of forgive them 70 times a level

about forgiveness.

00:07:12--> 00:07:51

That's a pretty serious disease. And look at the mercy of

our messenger sallallahu sallam. When the ayah is

revealed, he said then I'll ask more than 70 times. He's

that concern for his own law. But nonetheless, the

declaration of Allah in its absolute form, that these

people are beyond help, even if the messenger himself

was going to meet God speciScally for them. Even that

wouldn't be enough. This is how serious the diseases.

But when somebody realizes that disease is serious, the

next thing they want to know is do I have it or not? Do I

have the sickness or not? And what do I need to look for

in any disease? You look for symptoms, you look for

signs in yourself? And these symptoms are

00:07:51--> 00:08:18

not for you to look in anybody else for us? Where do you

Where are you supposed to look for yourself. The only

person who doesn't look in themselves is a person who

is sure that they can never catch it. They could never

possibly get the sickness, it doesn't catch people like

them, it catches others. But the thing about nifa is the

messenger himself so long, give us an axiom a principle

about our attitude towards hypocrisy. He said, I mean,

who ended up munafo.

00:08:21--> 00:08:24

Nobody feels safe from it, except a hypocrite.

00:08:25--> 00:09:05

And nobody is afraid of it acceptable evil. So if a person

thinks they don't have it, that's a pretty good sign that

they do. If a person is really sure that they have no

incident, no ounce of hypocrisy in them, that in and of

itself seals the deal that they in fact, do have hypocrisy.

So konkola. Another beneSt of this study is that you stop

being concerned about the hypocrisy of others, you

become more than anything else, concerned about the

hypocrisy of yourself, yourself. And if you Snd yourself

concerned with the hypocrisy of others, that in and of

itself is a pretty serious sign. That's a pretty major sign

that you're not as concerned as you need to be about

00:09:05--> 00:09:08

yourself. And I'm not as concerned as I need to be about

myself.

00:09:09--> 00:09:25

There are some other mark out more than 70 signs,

some count more than 100 signs. Some of the more

restricted lists I've seen are like 30 signs of a one off 40

times a one off, if I give you 40 signs of a Menaka

chances are you won't even remember to.

00:09:26--> 00:09:53

So what I've decided to do with this football is that at

least leave you with no more than six. And if you can

remember three or four of them and cellos are that's of

beneSt. Four of them, four of them. They come from a

Hadith of the Prophet sallallahu sallam, and two of them

come from a couple of items are actually the same as

those of Toba. The ones I'm going to share with you. So

start off with you from the Hadith of the Prophet alayhi

salatu salam, in which he says if

00:09:54--> 00:09:59

I had to manifest the narration of the studies, there are

four in one narration there are three signs of a hypocrite

so let's

00:10:00--> 00:10:03

Just trying to remember them in sha Allah for our own

beneSt.

00:10:04--> 00:10:05

He says is a candy bar

00:10:07--> 00:10:45

is a hairdresser candy bar. Whenever he speaks, he lies.

Whenever he speaks, he lies. If he speaks, there's some

element of a lie in it what whether this lie is to impress

someone, or to get out of trouble, or to make someone

happy, or out of fear, you know, people lie for different

reasons. You get late to work, your boss says, Why are

you late? The real reason is you overslept, but you don't

want to tell them that. So you say I trapc was pretty bad.

You think is not a big deal, we'll just line up not a big deal.

You know, you're at work, you're at home, and you're like,

you know, playing video games or something or

browsing something. And your dad walks by and says,

What are you doing?

00:10:45--> 00:11:22

You you all tab immediately a homework? You know, no,

no, it's not a big deal. Doesn't hurt that much. When he

speaks, he doesn't think twice that the fact that I am

lying is something major is not something small, when

you lie a lot, you know what happens, it's not a big deal to

you anymore. You don't even realize that you're doing it, it

just becomes part of your speech. You don't even think

twice about it. You don't even think twice about it. You

know, he's somebody's calling you on the phone, and you

don't want to talk to them. You'd rather Snish watching

the movie. So you let them go to voicemail, then you

send them a text message in a meeting we'll call you

back later. Right?

00:11:22--> 00:12:00

small, small, life's not a big deal, you would think it's not

a big deal. But as far as this Hadith of the Prophet is

concerned, some of these little things, they can add up,

and they can turn into a sign of hypocrisy. Now, there are

some instances in which obviously, there are exceptions.

There are exceptions in which even the Messenger of

Allah sallallahu Sallam has advised us to make the

exception. And this is where the when there's no harm,

like, are very speciSc instances, at least one instance, I

want to share with you, your wife made a meal for you.

And you take the Srst bite and it's the taste of death.

Right? But she and she asked you immediately How is it?

Well, at that

00:12:00--> 00:12:17

point, it's okay for you to say it reminds me it's not okay

for you to say it reminds me of stale judgment. You can

just say it's good. And humble enough, you can you can

stay safe. And the safest answer in a situation like that is

just feel comfortable. Because that could go either way.

Right? So don't say nothing.

00:12:18--> 00:12:55

So, the idea is that you, you can't you don't have to lie.

But you can, you know, avoid hurting people's feelings in

certain situations. But you know, you know yourself very,

very well, when is it that you're using lying as a shield?

And when is it that you're doing it for something good,

you know that very well yourself. But this is talking about

people that are trying to protect themselves. They're

trying to save their own skin, they're trying to get away

from some obligation, or get out of trouble, or make

someone happy for, you know, unfair reasons, is because

he was the Srst he says the second reason he says, or

the second sign of the hypocrite is a hassle.

00:12:57--> 00:13:36

When he's debated with when he argues with someone,

we get into disagreements all the time, you can get into

disagreements about little things or big things. You

know, people get into disagreements about which phone

service is better or which new device is, you know, a

better product or should you go PC or should you go

back? Or should you buy American or Japanese or

German people get into dumb arguments. But when you

get into any discussion, any argument whether it has to

do with something trivial, or it may have to do with

business or family, it may have to do with how you spend

your time, whatever it may be, if it takes very little for you

to explode, and become overly angry. This

00:13:36--> 00:14:14

in and of itself is a sign of hypocrisy. When he's argued

with when he's debated when he's disagreed with he

explodes jagella literally explodes. People are afraid to

talk to him because he's like a walking time bomb. He

could explode at any time. People know about this

person and this guy or that one. He's got a temper. She's

got a temper. I try to avoid talking to them. Because you

never know when it's gonna go off. I wouldn't want to be

on their bad side is that Hassan Mahajan is a second

time and here it is. SpeciScally I want to highlight

something. The hypocrites if you if you look at if you

study the attitudes of the hypocrites in the time of the

Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa

00:14:14--> 00:14:23

sallam, you learn some things. And one of the things you

learn is you know, when they would get the most

offended when something was said to them. That was

supposed to be good advice.

00:14:24--> 00:14:59

The hypocrite thinks of good advice as an insult. So

when good advice is being given, the hypocrite state

thinks this guy is judging me. He's trying to you know,

criticize me in public, he's trying to humiliate me, I'm not

gonna take that from him. Instead of taking it as good

advice. The Srst thought that goes in the mind of a

hypocrite is why is he talking to me like that? Who are

you to talk to me like that? Why should I take your

advice? Who do you think you are? Those are the

defenses that go up inside the mind of a hypocrite.

Actually, I'll give you a sign up and this kind of paranoia

that Allah talks about often in the Koran, especially in

sort of menarche Boone would be

00:14:59--> 00:15:00

I'm talking about

00:15:00--> 00:15:06
