What is a GIS?
• Definitions of a geographic information system
• A GIS is a computer system capable of capturing, storing, analyzing, and displaying
geographically referenced information; that is, data identified according to location.
• Usful tools
• Helping every one from scientist to citizeny to solve geographic problems
• Data
➢ The availability and accuracy of data can affect the results of any query or analysis.
➢ Hardware capabilities affect processing speed, ease of use and the type of output available.
• Software
➢ This includes not only the actual GIS software, but also various database, drawing, statistical,
imaging or other software.
➢ Analysis requires well defined, consistent methods to produce correct and reproducible results.
• The Network
➢ is increasingly integrated into many aspects of GIS use, and the days of standalone GIS are
mostly over.

GIS functions
• Capturing data
➢ )A GIS must provide methods for inputting geographic (coordinate) and tabular (attribute
data. The more input methods available, the more versatile the GIS.
• Storing data
➢ There are two basic data models for geographic data storage— vector and raster. A GIS should
be able to store geographic data in both.
• Querying data
➢ A GIS must provide utilities for finding specific features based on their locations or attribute
values.
• Analyzing data
➢ A GIS must have the ability to answer questions regarding the interaction of spatial
relationships between multiple datasets.
• Displaying data
➢ There must be tools for visualizing the geographic features using a variety of symbology.
• Output
➢ Results of display should be able to be output in a variety of formats such as maps, reports,
and graphs.

Digital representation of geospatial data:
Compare Between digital ana analogue
Digital Analgue
Easy to update Whole map to be remade.
Easy and quick transfer. Slow transfer.
Small store space. Large store space.
Easy to preserve. Paper maps disintegrate over time.
Easy automated analysis. Difficult and inaccurate to analyze.

Components of geographic data
Three general components to geographic information
) Geometry - Attributes –Behavior(
• Geometry : line – polygon – point
• Behavior : editing - display

(Raster – vector - geographic data)
Spatial data formats:
(Raster – cad – shipfile – couverge – geodatabase – internet map service – tables ……………)
Proximity analysis
Buffering مهم Finding the nearest feature
• is a polygon around some • Computes the distance from each
geographic feature or set of feature point in the input layer to the nearest
• A distance analysis tool for points, point, or polyline, in the near layer
lines, and areas • Point Distance:
• Create new polygon representing • Computes the distances between
specified distance point features in one layer to all points
• Answer questions based on in a second layer
proximity • Results in output table

To find which point falls To find the common For studying common
inside which polygon, areas between a line areas between the two
use the point-in-polygon layer and a polygon layers, use polygon-on-

Analysis options
The final step in analysis preparation is deciding which spatial analysis operations
will achieve the results you are seeking. Often, you will find that you have several
options which will deliver the information you need, but some might be less
convenient than others. Try to choose the method that answers the question in the
most efficient manner.
Finally, it is highly recommended that you chart out the proposed analytical
process. This will encourage you to think the problem through from start to finish,
and you can save a lot of trouble in the long run.
Attribute Operations
Join: one to one, or one to many, relationship appends attributes
Relate: many to one relationship, attributes not appended
For both Joins and Relates:
• Association exists only in the map document
• Underlying files not changed unless export data

Vector Raster
• Simplest one because each object • Each object has many values
has one value كل objectليه قيمة pixels
• Structure (geometry typs ) [point
Discete data • Each pixels has one value
High storage

Geodatabase basics
All geodatabases (personal or ArcSDE) can store tables, feature classes ,
feature datasets, and other functionality like rules, relationships, and
geometric networks
Tables
A table stores descriptive information about geographic and nongeographic
objects. Sometimes called Object classes, these tables may store
government census data or any other tabular information useful for the task
at hand.
Feature classes
Feature classes are collections of features with the same type of geometry :
point, line, or polygon.
Feature datasets
12
Feature datasets are collections of feature classes that are topologically
associated.

What is a Georeferencing???
*Is the process of establishing a relationship between the data
displayed in your Gis software and its real world location. this is
accomplished by using a coordinate system.
*Data is referenced to allocation on the earths surface (analyzing
relationships among real world objects)
Geographic coordinate system
Projected coordinate system: to get accurate analysis results from
your GIS data base you need to understand and determined your
coordinate system.
Coordinate system:
Geographic coordinate system(global reference syst.):
Latitude(parallels) and longitude(meridians)are not uniform across
the earth'surface
*Longitude : divided into 180 (from prime and meridian or
greenwich)degree toeast and to west.
*Latitude: divided into 90 degree to north and to south.
