SIEMENS TANTRANSCO ERODE : 230KV / 110KV GIS Substation

LA selection basis (Typical example for 110KV system).

• Nominal system voltage : 110 KV

• Highest system voltage (Us) : 123 KV (As per table-1 of IEC-61936-1)
• Continous operating voltage of surge arrester (Uc):

Uc = 1.05 x Us / √3 (Clause 6.3.2.2 of IEC 60099-5)

Uc = 1.05 x 123 / √3 = 74.57 KV

• Rated voltage of Surge arrester (Ur):

Uc = 0.8 x Ur (Figure 20 b Note-2 of IEC 60099-5)
Ur = Uc / 0.8
= 74.57 / 0.8 = 93.2 KV

As per table-2 of IEC 60099-4, next higher rating of available surge arrester is 96 KV

• Based on above selected Rated voltage of 96KV, value of continuous operating voltage is
calculated again as Uc = 0.8 x Ur

Uc = 0.8 x 96 = 76.8 ̴ 77 KV

• Arrester classification as per Table-1 of IEC 60099-4.

Designation = SM (Station class medium duty)
Discharge Current = 10 KA
Repetitive charge transfer rating (Qrs) ≥ 1.6 C
Thermal Energy rating (W th) ≥ 7 kJ / kV
• As per table L.2 of IEC 60099-4, Line discharge class for 10KA surge arrester is Class-3.
• As per IEC 60099-4, Cl. 8.5.4: Long-duration current withstand (2 ms) ≈ 500 × Qrs / C = 500x 1.6
= 800 A minimum. Offered value = 850A.
• As per Table-4 of IEC 60099-4: High current impulse withstand (4/10 µs) = 100KA for 10KA class
arresters.
• IEC 60099-4, CL 8.10.4.1, System Fault current = 50KA and duration >0.2 s, Rated short circuit
current (0,2 s) = 50 KA
• Residual voltage calculation:
As per below clauses of IEC, residual voltage calculation shall be done at 0.5, 1 & 2 times of
Nominal discharge current and the values of Residual voltages shall be manufacturer’s data.
As per IEC 60099-4: Cl 8.3.1: The purpose of the residual voltage type test is to obtain the data
necessary to derive the maximum residual voltage as explained in 6.3. The maximum residual
voltage at a lightning current impulse used for routine tests shall be specified and published in the
manufacturer's data.

IEC 60099-4: Cl 8.3.3: One lightning current impulse shall be applied to each of the three samples
for each of the following three peak values of approximately 0,5, 1 and 2 times the nominal
discharge current of the arrester.
IEC 60099-4: Cl 8.3.4: One switching current impulse shall be applied to each of the three samples
with peak values according to Table 1 with a tolerance of ±5 %. The residual voltages are
determined in accordance with 6.3.
• Temporary Over voltages: Temporary over voltages shall be calculated for 1 s & 10 s as per IEC
60099-4, clause no: 6.2.3.5. Further the value of Temporary over voltage at 10 s shall be equal to
the rated voltage as per Clause no. 3.54 of IEC 60099-4.
Temporary Over voltage for 10 s = Rated voltage = 96 KV
• Energy discharge capabilities are experimental values.
• Power frequency withstand voltage:

Minimum As per IEC 61936-1 table 1 Offered Value

Power Frequency withstand voltage (1min) = Power Frequency withstand voltage (1min) =
230 kV 275 kV
Switching Impulse withstand voltage Switching Impulse withstand voltage
