Introductory Message

For the Teacher:

These Learning Activity Sheets (LAS) were collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by teachers and program supervisors to assist the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
them acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use these learning
activity sheets. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist them as they do the tasks contained herein.

opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be able to process the contents of this learning resource while being an active

Week Using adverbs (adverbs of

• Use adverbs (manner, place, time) in sentences (EN4G-llle-

Objectives:

1. Define adverbs as part of speech.


2. Discuss adverb of manner with examples using pictures.
3. Use the correct time expression to complete a given sentence.
4. Give examples of adverb of time as used in the sentence.
5. Identify adverb of place in the sentence.
6. Tell whether the sentences contain adverbs of manner, place
and time.
7. Label the sentence according to the words that is being used
for (tomorrow-time).
8. Rewrite the sentences and put marks using appropriate
adverbs.
9. Complete the sentences using appropriate adverbs.

Content Background:

An adverb is a word that modifies verbs, adjectives and other


adverbs.

Examples:
1. "That idea is simply ridiculous."
(The adverb simply modifies the adjective ridiculous)
2. "She sings nicely."
(The adverb nicely modifies the verb sing)
3. "She did it really well."
(The adverb really modifies the adverb well)

Basically, most adverbs tell you how, in what
way, when, where, and to what extent something is done. In other
words, they describe the manner, place, or time of an action.

Example:

1. He speaks quietly. (quietly is an adverb of manner.)


2. I live here. (here is an adverb of place.)
3. We'll leave tomorrow. (tomorrow is an adverb of time.)
4. She never sleeps late. (never is an adverb of frequency.)

Story Time!
Directions: Read the story,” A Muslim Holiday (excerpt)” by Benita
N. Miranda (English 4 TM pp.278-279)

A Muslim Holiday
By Benita N. Miranda

Muslim are religious people. They believe in one God called


Allah. Their prophet is Id Muhammad whose teachings are found
in the Quran. The Quran is the Bible of the Muslims. Their Religion
is called Islam.
Muslims celebrate several holidays. The most colorful of these
holidays is the Hari Raya Pausa. This is the fasting during
Ramadan.
During the month of Ramadan, the houses are lighted at
night with lanterns, coconut oil lamps, or seashell lamps, These
are decorated with paper buntings and ribbons. Everybody is
happy especially at night when the people break their fast.

There is a display of fireworks that is always a part of the Hari
Raya Pausa celebration. There is much banging of bamboo guns
or lantakas.

On the day of the Hari Raya Pausa, the children go from


house to house kissing hands of the old people and relatives. The
elders themselves greet one another with Assalamu Alaykum
which means “Peace be with You”. The Muslim child is usually
taught with the Alphabet in Arabic and the Quran as early as four
years old. That is why they celebrate their holidays with great
interest. They know when and why the holiday is celebrated.

Learning Activity 1

Adverbs of manner tell how things are done. They answer the
question “how”. Most adverbs of manner are formed from
adjectives. These adverbs are formed by adding -ly to the end of an
adjective.
Example: happy – happily easy - easily
slow – slowly silent - silently
careful – carefully beautiful - beautifully
Look at the pictures and supply the correct adverb of manner like
the example.

building. Turn right when you get to the corner and you

Giving and following directions are not only used in locating


places. There are directions found in the labels of medicine bottles,
boxes, or tubes. Have you read some labels found in medicine
bottles? Do you know what the label means?
Study the following pictures. The sentences on the right will
help you know what each label means.

Learning Activity 3

The words First, Next, Then and Lastly were used to follow the
directions in their correct order. These are the words that signal
what is the next step to follow. These are called connectives or
sequence words.

Directions may be given in doing something, how to make simple


things or activity, how to use the things or objects and how to find
places.

Here are the steps in doing something:

Do you know how to cook crabs? Here are the steps.

First, wash the crabs.


Next, sprinkle dash of salt and put them in a pan with the
amount of water.
Then, cover the pan and cook for about twenty minutes.
Lastly, take the cooked crabs out of the pan.

Directions: Below is the steps in cooking rice. Arrange them in the
correct order using the connectives or sequence words. Write it
paragraph form.

1. You will need 2 cups of rice and 2 cups of water.


2. Clean the rice by removing stones, insects and palay.
3. Put the rice in the pot.
4. Wash the rice once or twice without rubbing the grains.
5. Add 2 cups of water.
6. Cover the pot and place over the fire until rice boils.
7. Lessen heat and let it simmer until rice is cooked.

A. The following sentences give us the steps in preparing calamansi


juice. Write these steps in paragraph form using the connectives.

1. Cut crosswise 3 pieces of calamansi.


2. Squeeze the sliced calmansi into a glass of cold water.
3. Add water and sugar to taste.
4. Stir gently.
5. You now have a refreshing juice.

liking for others.

Content Background:

The main idea is the central point or thought the author


wants to communicate to readers. The main idea answers the
question, “What does the author want me to know about the
topic?” or “What is the author teaching me?” Often the author
states the main idea in a single sentence.
In paragraphs, a stated main idea is called the topic sentence.
In an article, the stated main idea is called the thesis statement.

When the author does not state the main idea directly, it is called
an implied main idea. An implied main idea requires you to look at
the specific statements in the paragraph and consider what idea
they suggest.
The key sentence express the central claim of a paragraph.
The rest of the sentences in the paragraph elaborate or support
this claim.
The key sentence in a paragraph is called the topic sentence.
Lots of times it is the first sentence.

For example:
Yesterday I had a lot of fun with my cousin. She came from the
next town 25 miles away. It was a Saturday and she took a bus to
my town. I went to meet her at the bus station. (Then go on to tell
more things about your day together.)

I like summer most of all. Summer is the warmest time of the


year. In summer, the days become longer and the nights become
shorter. People can work more and be out for longer.
People can do lots of things during summer. Some like going
outdoors to enjoy nature. Others like playing outdoor games. They
can go for a ride on a horse or a motor bike. They can also go
swimming, boating, hiking, or playing frisbee and other ball
games.
Everybody waits summer. They plan in advance by having
their work done months ahead and saving money for vacation.
Some families stay home and have some fun doing summer
activities while others spend their summer in other places on a
vacation. What is important is that summer is spent with families
and friends.

man-made structures. It has beaches, historical places, old
churches, parks, and monuments. They are often visited with
not only by Filipinos but by tourists as well. These have
become landmarks that are make us truly proud to be
Filipinos.

2. My vacation in the farm is perfect. Ther whole family stayed


there for one month. We helped our father in harvesting
fruits. We also helped mother in cooking our food. I learned
many things about cooking.

3. Honey bees are insects about ¾ of an inch big. They are


reddish-brown and black with yellow stripes in the abdomen.
The head, legs an antennae are black. Their thorax is covered
with thick pale hair.

4. The queen bee is the most important member of the hive. She
is the ruler of the colony. Her job is to lay eggs. She lays at
least two thousands eggs everyday.

5. The bamboo is the giant of the grass family. Some bamboos


can grow as tall as the trees. They can grow in the lowlands
or rolling hills. There are different kinds bamboos.
