CELTA: What? Why? How?

CELTA: What?
• “The most widely recognised English teaching
qualification in the world” (www.cambridgeenglish.org)
• Initial qualification
• Teaching techniques-methodologies AND
practical experience
• Observation of experienced teachers
• Apply learning through delivering
communicative lessons

CELTA: Who for?
- New teachers
- Teachers with some experience who want to develop
their skills
- First-language and non-first-language language
speakers

Entry Requirements:
- Aged 18+
- Educated to a standard required for entry into higher
education
- Proficient user of English language (CEFR C1+)

CELTA Course structure
120 hours contact between candidates and tutors
• Supervised lesson planning
• 6 hours assessed teaching practice (at a
minimum of 2 levels)
• Feedback on teaching practice
• Peer observations of teaching practice
• 6 hours observation of experienced teachers
• Guidance with the 4 written assignments

Maximum ratio of one tutor for every six candidates.


Minimum two tutors on each course.
